Patricia Daniels is an author and editor for National Geographic who has written, edited, or contributed to books on history, science, and geography, most recently the National Geographic Encyclopedia of Space. She lives in State College, Pennsylvania.

Stephen G. Hyslop has been a writer and editor for Time-Life Books and National Geographic, as well as author of Bound for Santa Fe and Chroniclers of Indian Life. He lives in Virginia.

Douglas G. Brinkley is the director of the Theodore Roosevelt Center for American Civilization and Professor of History at Tulane University. He authored two New York Times Best Sellers: Tour of Duty: John Kerry and the Vietnam War and Voices of Valor: D-Day; June 6, 1944. He is the official historian for NBC News. Dr. Brinkley is contributing editor for the Los Angeles Times Book Review and American Heritage and a contributor to the New York Timesand The New Yorker.

I Rate and Compare World History Atlas Books

As a reader I like to have quick reference books at my finger tips including a new version of the Oxford English Dictionary about 3500 pages long - that I use almost daily. So I decided to add a "history atlas". In the process of doing my research I read the other amazon.com reviewers and then made three trips to two large book stores to actually look at the books and get a better feel for which was the best. I ended up buying the Oxford Atlas of World History. Here are my picks and rankings.

Listed by My ranking, #1 is the best, #2 is a creative alternative but no substitute.

1. Atlas of World History, Oxford University Press 2002, 368 pages, (...), 13.5" x 10.3" x 1.62" ranked 46,632 on Amazon.com. Hands down winner - professional - good text descriptions, outstanding maps and drawings, covers most things from the cave man forward. Negatives: Big and heavy. If you want to save a few dollars buy the "concise" version.

2. Creative alternative: The Penguin Atlas of World History, Penguin Books 2004, (...), just a paperback sized, just published, 304 pages. Surprisingly impressive, lots of text and pictures mixed together and it is easy to carry around. A nice quick alternative but it will be printed in two volumes.

3. Timelines of World History, DK Publishing 2002, 666 pages, (...). 10.0" x 1.6" ranked 25,800 on Amazon.com. Second with lots of value but in some ways not as comprehensive.

4. National Geographic Almanac of World History, National Geographic 2003, 384 pages, (...), 9.6" x 7.8" x 1.17" ranked 24,426 on Amazon.com. Similar to but less impressive than Oxford books. More text, narrower coverage, fewer maps and drawings.

5. DK Atlas of World History, DK Publishing, 352 pages,(...), 10.96" x 14.66" x 1.28" ranked 10,716 on Amazon.com. My last place book seems like a giant comic book. I love the DK travel books but this seems like one step beyond DK's area of expertise. Superficially it is similar to the Oxford book and it is cheap, and some might like it but it tries to be politically correct and fails.

6. Oxford Dictionary of World History, Oxford University Press, 704 pages, (...), pocketbook sized, sales rank 330,000. Mainly terms, people, and dates but has a few maps also. Limited use but an alternative. I prefer the new Penguin book but this is the best history dictionary to buy.

The most useful book on my shelf!

The Almanac of World History is a pricelss resource. First of all, the book now cost half of it's original price! The book is worth the oiginal $60.00 price tag. If you're looking for a book that sums up world history AND will maintain your interest, this book is for you! I find myself referring to this book countless times. This is a book that should be in every home! The book provides pictures,timelines,short dialogues and text to bring history alive! Our culture is so confined to American history. Do yourself a favor and begin to explore the history of the world. This book is a great place to start!

Nice World History Almanac

This is a very useful almanac if you are interested in World History, covers all the world, well designed and well written, contains basic information about the world history as expected from an Almanac. But, I have one thing to criticize. A little confusing, as the close civilizations in character fall apart in the book. So you jump from one civilization to a totally different one that takes you away from the subject on which you have already focused. Other than that, I think it is a better idea to make it more detailed in more volumes.

Well....you have to read it!

Hot romance in every way possible. There's a few typos but well worth the read. There's two stories in one and only the first is a mfmm story. You start out with Cassandra who is trapped in a situation she knows nothing about, to make matters worse she falls into a to good to be true romance. If you like suspense and steamy hot sex, this is the story. The second story, you meet Chelsea who is a teenager who falls for an older man. Let me just say you've got to read it to believe it. Madison Faye you've got a new reader, because if this is your alter ego, wow! New power to the almighty alter ego.

A menage with scorching well-written scenes and a slave ring to break up. Well written, and we get a fine HEA!

This was one steaming sexy read! There were kidnappings and a sex for sale ring, A sleasy step-father. But at the end we get our HEA for our heroine, Cassandra and her loves: Zane, Foster, and Gareth.

Cassandra, is stressed by too much work and time constraints, but decides to go on an island vacation with her mom and her unlikeable step-father. She decides to have an evening of just having fun and goes to find the dancing and music down further on the beach. There she meets the tall, well muscled, gorgeous duo of Foster and Zane. After several drinks, she decides to throw caution away on the breezes and invites them back to her private bungalo on the beach. Some really hot sexy scenes, WHEW! YEAH!

The next night Cassandra, or Cassie once again tries to reconnect with the fabulous duo, but finds that they have been called away on business when another just as hot, huge, and gorgeous guy approaches them while they are dancing. They leave her with their friend, Gareth. Gareth and Cassie also hit it off really well and a night of scorching sex ensues.

That night Cassie is abducted and things go from bad to really bad for this pampered miss. The three guys are used to taking orders from a boss, but nothing that involves kidnapping and slave auctions. They try to keep her distracted and as comfortable as possible under these extreme circumstances (including more Hot SEX).

The guys are found out and she is put on the auction block and sold. Exciting, but it all works out in the end with a satisfactory HEA! If you like menages and lots of creative and hot SEX, you'll love this story.

3 short totally mind blowing stories all in one. The first one holy wow with the hotness, 3 guys one girl awesome. The second one builds up to a nice risky professor /student relationship that just makes you totally jealous and the third mind bowing hot older neighbor with the younger girl next door. All I can say is this book is hot and if you like hotness you got read this ! Short and directly to the point ,full of steamy passion stories that keep you hooked!

About the Author
Kitty O. Locker was an Associate Professor of English at The Ohio State University, where she taught courses in workplace discourse and resarch methods. She has also taught at Texas A&M University and the University of Illinois at Urbana. She received her BA from DePauw University and her MC and PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana. She is very well known for her research background and her research in progress includes work on collaborative writing in the classroom and the workplace. She has served as the Interim Editor of the Bulletin of the Association of Business Communication and in 1994-5 as President of the Association for Business Communication. From 1997 - 2000, she edited ABC's Journal of Business Communication.

Stephen is an Associate Professor at Columbus State Community College and a Lecturer at The Ohio State University. He teaches courses in business and technical communication, composition, creative writing, journalism, public relations, film and literature and freshman experience. He has also taught public relations at Ohio Dominican College. He received an MA in English and BAs in journalism and English from Ohio State. Steve has presented papers at conferences such as the Association for Busienss Communication, Northeast Modern Language Association, College English Association of Ohio, and Conferences on College Composition and Communication. Steve has served on ABC's Two-Year College Committee and on ABC's Diversity Committeee.

Very good introduction to business writing

I bought this textbook for a course called Business Communications which is intended to pick up where College Composition 1 & 2 leave off. As a student still working to develop my writing skills I though that this book was a very good introduction to business writing. It has a lot of good information and tips for the up and coming business writer.

Great book for anyone planning on working in the business world. It's up to date and very informative. Except for some question in the review of every module it is same as the 6th edition many college are using. Save yourself the money and buy this.

Business Communications Building Critical Skills

This is one of the few textbooks that would merit a cover to cover review. The examples give the student a very good form to follow. The only drawback is the examples written are not very realistic.

I received this book as a gift. Talk about subtle. It was after a conversation where the person remarked on the fact that I hadn't had a boyfriend for over 2 years. But it turned out to be the best gift that I ever received! The 12 Game Changers really break down the dating game in a way that a single woman in her 30s can digest. We don't have time for puppy love or time wasters! If you are ready for real love then buy this book.

The authors are frank without being too harsh. They also don't sugarcoat the facts. It's well written and the advice comes from educated experts who have been in our position. A great combination of empathy and knowledge. If you are a woman who almost has it all this book will help you obtain the rest!

This was an amazing and life altering book! It really opened my eyes to the ways I can get the results I want from dating, including what mistakes I may be making and how I can change them, even how long I should be waiting to have sex! It was an honest, in-depth look at the realities of the dating world, and I'll really never date the same after having read this great book! I was able to label all the mistakes I've been making and just how I can change for the better. This was truly a well-written and engaging look at single women and the world of dating! I am so thankful to the authors for writing such an honest and helpful guide for myself and all single women!

FINALLY ... A POSITIVE APPROACH TO DATING & ROMANCE

Although I can be skeptical about dating advice books, this manual is a refreshing guide for single women everywhere. The low price of this Kindle book meant that I could buy the guide without worrying if it was right for me or not -- of course I found that, no matter the low price tag, it's the perfect book for me. You get a lot more than the "typical" advice and you will finish the book with actual tools to put your love life back on track. This book has made me feel more positive about dating than I've felt in years. Please don't think that I'm not like you -- I take care of myself and I am a fun person -- but I've found finding the right man to be very difficult indeed. After reading this book, I feel I am now equipped with some "home truths" that make my interactions with men much easier. I've got some insight into the male mind too! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to find a relationship.

If You're Willing to Work, It's Gold

I've been playing guitar for nearly 20 years but have always been frustrated by my limitations. My only formal training was an intro guitar class in college and a few months worth of private lessons some time later. I taught myself to finger pick to an intermediate level but have never been very accomplished on lead playing and am not versatile at all. I recently stumbled across some info on the Learn & Master Guitar series on a couple of guitar websites and thought it sounded interesting. As I researched the course, I found it nearly unanimously praised and I eventually decided to bite the bullet and spend the $150 (it seems that the course is nearly always "on sale" on their website). I am so glad I did, just wish I'd had this course 20 years ago!

My problem has always been simple ignorance - I had no idea where to begin. This course does a great job of guiding the player from the most basic principals through to more advanced studies. The instructor on the videos is very warm and is a good teacher - he takes things slowly and methodically and explains everything clearly (and he is also a great guitarist). The course does a good job of keeping things dynamic, mixing theory with hands on learning and offering a number of different resources to help the learning process - the DVD sessions, lessons from the workbook, and CDs with accompaniment tracks to jam along with. The content is also quite diverse - you'll work on strumming, finger picking, soloing, chords, scales, rock, blues, and jazz styles, and on and on. The videos are well produced and have a really pleasant vibe. Each session has a suggested time period for mastering that session's material based upon an assumed practice schedule of 15-30 minutes per day. Some sessions may take a week, others a couple of weeks, etc. I think the time estimates are fair for beginners, though some more accomplished players and/or those with prior music theory knowledge may move more quickly through the course. One other very helpful part of the course is the online experience. There is an active community of online users and forums at [...] and the instructor interacts there from time to time in addition to the help & encouragement found from other students.

There are two real sticking points for this course in my opinion. First, your practice time will be self-directed, so lazy folks may not be motivated to follow through. I think this type of course is best suited to self-starter types who are disciplined enough to practice without someone else making them. A flip-side benefit is that you can learn at your own pace based upon your existing skill level and your time availability. Second, this course is pretty heavy on the music theory. For people who just want to learn some cool-sounding riffs and rock out, this course may not be your thing. This series really is about learning and mastering the guitar, and that cannot happen without learning some good solid music theory. This is a strength in my opinion but I know it will turn some others off (heck, I was a 10 year old kid taking piano many moons ago, and I remember how little interest I had in learning to read music!). Highly recommended if you've got the time and inclination to work hard - if that's you then this is money very well spent! This course was initially sold independently but later branded under the Gibson name. It's no wonder Gibson picked it up, it's really good.

Not the expanded version!

As other reviewers have said, this is NOT the expanded version with 20 session DVDs, despite the product picture showing that. I bought it hoping it would be, but will be returning it now. You need to buy the expanded edition to get the 20 DVDs, which apparently is much more useful since the other 10 DVDs contain detailed bonus workshops for each of the 20 sessions. Amazon needs to correct their picture for this listing to only show 10 DVDs instead of 20.

The best guitar course available (by far)

This is a review of "Learn & Master Guitar" with Steve Krenz. Steve Krenz is an amazing instructor. He obviously has years and years of experience teaching guitar to a wide variety of students. The video and audio quality is outstanding. The use of split screen is very effective. For example, showing simultaneous views of right hand, left hand, and the music staff and/or tablature.

This course comes in two editions: the original edition (119) and the extended edition (149). (There is also a home school version.) I purchased the extended version, which supplements the 10 DVDs of the original edition with 10 additional DVDs with practice workshops. I highly recommend getting the extended editions: playing along with Steve on the additional workshop videos is a very effective means for you to learn the material covered in the associated lesson.

This course is (by far) the best video instruction course for guitar. According to the Learn & Master website, this is intended to be a two year course of study. Some folks may be put off by the relatively high price of this course. But consider this: Lots of folks (or their parents) will gladly spend 20 to 60 dollars per week for guitar lessons, without realizing that two years of instruction can easily cost 2000 dollars or more! If I were you, I would spend 1000 to 2000 dollars on a nice guitar, then spend the next two years with this course. Another consideration: Even if you go to a guitar instructor, he or she will probably not be as good (complete, methodical, and accurate) as Steve Krenz. In my youth, I took guitar lessons from several instructors. They were all great guitar players; but they failed to teach me fundamentals that every guitar player should know. "Learn & Master Guitar" is carefully designed to include the skills & knowledge required by all guitar players.

One small drawback to this course is that it may (only at the start) be a little boring for the eager young guitar player who (impatiently) wishes to immediately have some fun playing chords. If you are one of these eager young folks, then I recommend that you first get Fender's "Getting Started on Electric Guitar" or "Getting Started on Acoustic Guitar." Either of these will get you started playing chords straight away. This can certainly be a lot of fun, and will perhaps motivate you to get serious about guitar. With that motivation, you will then be ready for "Learn & Master Guitar."

Steve Krenz covers a lot of good music theory in this course (a little bit each lesson); however, I highly recommend that you also get the Hal Leonard "Music Theory for Guitarists" book (by Tom Kolb) and "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory" by Michael Miller. These books will teach you all about keys, tempo, chord construction, chord progressions (the chords to play in any key), and scales.

While "Learn & Master Guitar" starts off with a very basic introduction to reading music, it is NOT based on sight-reading music (as the Berklee courses are). If you wish to learn how to read music, then (by all means) get "A Modern Method for Guitar - Volume 1: Book/DVD-ROM Pack."

Here are a few of the topic covered by "Learn & Master Guitar" (go to their website for more detailed information): How to hold the guitar and pick, right and left hand positions, tuning, notes in the open position, basic music reading (for notes in first position), notes on the 5th and 6th strings (for barre chord and power chord placement), basic open chords (major, minor, seventh, suspended), barre chords with roots on the 5th and 6th strings, strumming (strumming patterns), finger picking, pentatonic scales (movable patterns for all keys), modes (movable patterns for all keys), advanced chords, playing the blues, basic techniques (bends, hammer-on, pull-off, vibrato, palm muting, etc.), advanced strumming, jazz, soloing.

The workshop portion of the DVD (and the extra workshops in the extended edition) are very effective in helping the student learn the guitar. It is like having your own personal instructor. The great thing about the DVD is that you can back up and repeat the instruction as much as you need. When learning the guitar as a beginner, our brains can sometimes learn something new in 30 minutes, but it then takes our fingers a week or more to master what we have just learned. When you go to a guitar instructor, you do not have the benefit of the instructor's help during that week of practice. With this DVD set, you can always replay the DVD to compare your progress against the instructor's playing.

Another great feature about this DVD course is the inclusion of "Jam Along" CDs. I converted these CDs to MP3 files, which I then play through a guitar amp or effects box (along with the guitar).

A teenager or adult will have absolutely no problem going through this course without an instructor's help. Most children will probably benefit from adult guidance. I read on the "Learn & Master" website that the home school version of the course comes with a booklet that is intended to help a parent guide their child through the course (even if the parent does not play guitar).

If you are concerned that your child's interest in guitar might just be a passing fancy, then get either one of the Fender "Getting Started on . . . Guitar" courses first. If, after that, your child has enthusiasm for learning guitar, then the "Learn & Master Guitar" course is your best course you can find. In fact, I feel that it is better than having a live instructor for the beginning guitar player.

Afterwards: There are some great guitar instruction videos available online. For example, search for videos from Berklee, Justin Sandercoe, Joe Satriani, and dolphinstreet. Justin Sandercoe has the best videos (that I know of) for learning string bending and vibrato.

Wonderful songbook of Judy's concert and movie years.

This is an absolutely wonderful collection of show tunes from some of America's best songwriters. Selection includes songs from Judy's movies, television shows, and concert appearances. This is a golden collection of those wonderful Hollywood musical composers, including George Gershwin and most especially, Irving Berlin.
I highly recommend it!
