This monograph examines the principles and applications of head-space analysis—a new and rapidly developing independent field in gas chromatographic analysis based on the use of "out of column" phase equilibria and partition coefficients in gas-liquid states. Different variations of quantitative analysis, including techniques for increasing analytical sensitivity and the calibration of chromatographs, are also presented. The advantages of analytical and physicochemical applications are illustrated by such examples as the determination of volatile organic impurities in natural and industrial discharge waters, polymers, and air, and also by examples in medical, biological, food, agricultural, and other types of research. Also included are discussions of the automatic instruments and technical equipment needed to conduct these analyses. A basic knowledge of the principles of gas chromatography and physical chemistry (an understanding of phase equilibria) is assumed. The book, therefore, can be used by a wide circle of readers, from teachers and students in advanced courses dealing with analytical chemistry and gas chromatography, to workers at testing and analytical laboratories. Maxine Hong Kingston (China Men) distills the dire lessons of her mother's mesmerizing "talk-story" tales of a China where girls are worthless, tradition is exalted and only a strong, wily woman can scratch her way upward. The author's America is a landscape of confounding white "ghosts"--the policeman ghost, the social worker ghost--with equally rigid, but very different rules. Like the woman warrior of the title, Kingston carries the crimes against her family carved into her back by her parents in testimony to and defiance of the pain.

Good read

You learn a lot about how cultural tension and communication. Kingston is trapped between her parents expectations and American expectations throughout the story and conveys this through talk-story. Her memoir was very interesting because it explores the power of language along with stereotypes that she encountered or that she imposed on others. This book was great.

This collection of Chinese folklore is also a complex soul-searching journey for the author in which she delves into the folklore of her Chinese heritage that has been imparted to her over the years mainly by her mother and assesses how these tales relate to her own inner self in the way that she has been raised by her parents and also in the way that she has grown both within and apart from these cultural boundaries.

The stories themselves are fairly interesting and entertaining, but what really makes this book noteworthy is the introspection of the author as a Chines-American woman growing up within two separate cultures in the 1970's and the inner strength and courage that she develops throughout this growing-up process.

While it was a bit outside of my comfort zone at times, I really appreciated this book for the honesty and sincerity of the author and the courage that it took to put all of her internal feelings and thoughts out into the ope for all to see.

This book came in a timely manor and was a great read. The stories can be read separately and each carry their own meaning, but are still cohesive and all relate back to the main character. A great read.

Fat shaming through the centuries. There was very little about how the notion of what constitutes the idea of "slender" has changed over time and almost nothing about the ridicule heaped on those who were considered "scrawny". It was also tiresome to keep converting the weights given in the British stone (14 lbs). There were a few nice quotations but not a lot of really useful information.

This book provides a very comprehensive history of diets and diet-promoters. Those who, like me, have spent their lives on one diet or another, will be interested in how the "modern" approaches to dieting so often have very deep roots, and how the promoters of fad diets have used almost the same arguments and approaches for centuries.

I am really beyond words. It is a reaffirmation of things I had felt and pondered. My higher self has been guiding me to these realizations but sometimes you need other sources. Why bias the book?

I found this book via kindle unlimited and thought it would be interesting to read. Everything was going well until the author decided to make it a book that is bias. I seriously doubt that the advanced beings of the universe care what spiritual path anyone is on. To write 'Embrace your Christianity' biases the book. The advanced beings are greater than that as they accept all people. The book was returned without any further reading.
