PREFACE

The HVAC/R industry has progressively become more technical. With new technology, industries are requiring their employees' skills be updated to match the current changes. HVAC/R competency/certification tests are directed toward students and technicians at all skill levels. As a result, national certification competency exams are being offered by many organizations, including the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI), Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), Refrigeration Service Engineer Society (RSES), and the ESCO Institute.

The Guide to the HVAC/R Certification and Competency Tests is designed to help students and technicians pass competency and certification exams. This book is divided into two areas: a Study Guide and a Question Section. The Study Guide and the Question Section cover System Components and Tools; Electrical Theory and Application; Air Flow Components and Duct Fabrication; and Indoor Air Quality and Safety. The Question Section covers one additional topic: Service and Troubleshooting.

The student/technician will benefit most by reading the Study Guide first. Then, the student should turn to the Question Section for the related statement. For example, the first statement in question 1 of System Components and Tools (Hand Tools) reads "A torx driver has a star shaped head that is used on torx type screws." The student would then turn to the same section in the Questions and try to answer question 1.

In Section Four of the Study Guide, an EPA Certification Study Guide has been provided to assist the student in successfully passing Type 1, 11, III, and Universal Recover/Recycle Certification Examinations.

It is the hope of the authors that all information provided in this book will assist the student in successfully passing certification exams offered by any HVAC/R national organization. Acknowledgments

And, don't eat the fish....

Ever since Jeffrey Sachs hit me between the eyes with a two-by-four with The Price of Civilization I have been devouring every book I can find on the subject of the American voter who seems to be voting the country into destruction by ignoring what is happening all around us. The spotlight seems to have settled on the segment of society described in White Trash, Hillbilly Elegy, Thomas Frank's book about Kansas and a number of others, all attempting to understand what we now see as a Trump supporter. Strangers in Their Own land, in my opinion, is one of the best of these books I have read. The author is different in that she has much more compassion for her subjects and does not sink to ridicule out of exasperation...a common reflex when people seem to be acting against all reason and prudence...but she makes a real effort to understand them and the source of this perplexing behavior. I have learned that there is no arguing with their point of view, but for those of us trying to make sure that we ourselves are not losing our minds, the statistical information in this book is clear and relevant and to me, worth the price of the book.

A fairly objective look at the inner workings of Louisiana's political and industrial culture

I took a particular interest in this book because I am actually from Lake Charles and grew up there, until leaving at 17 to join the Navy. I felt the author did a fair job in setting the scene. At first she made it sound like a primitive back-woods kind of place, but eased into a more flattering depiction once she was talking to some of the local people. That's what makes South La great anyway, the people. The book offers several interesting paradoxes: the main paradox of why people are so right-leaning, big government hating in a state that relies so heavily on federal subsidies, and also the juxtaposition of people needing big industry for their livelihoods, but also hating that they have to live with its pollution and corruption within the state government. She uses a lot of statistics and facts to make her points, and for the most part, I found it's an objective analysis of the state and explaining it's political leaning.

The Great Paradox Personified

I have been fortunate to become familiar with the places and people of Louisiana described in this book and I can't begin to express how grateful I am to the author for delving into explaining "the great paradox". I am Californian born and raised and originally traveled to southwest Louisiana to pick up an accordion made by Mark Savoy in Eunice LA. I keep returning because the people I met, and friends I made, are as kind, gentle, open and intelligent as the folks described here. But, try as I might to reconcile the differences in our social/political views I failed....until I read this book! Thank-you Arlie Russell Hochschild for offering this bridge between the right and the left. Fellow MSNBC watchers, after reading this book I urge you to visit southwest Louisiana yourself - you will never view "the South" or Southerners, the same.

All 14-year-old Monica Bloomfield wants is to spend August at a science camp far away from her idiot sister and weird little brother. Trouble is, Monica’s being dragged into the wedding party of her crabby old great aunt who lives in England—and if she wants to earn that science camp, she has to keep her siblings in line for the entire trip, plus convince her crazy Grandma to move into a nursing home pronto. Monica’s determined to succeed, but things start out badly—and go downhill fast.

First, her hyperactive brother overdoses on caffeine right before their eight-hour flight to England. Then a botched wine-tasting party ends so badly that even a policeman is left speechless (and in need of a new uniform). Getting into science camp isn’t going to be easy—especially with a rampaging bull, drunk parrot and the most gorgeous guy in the universe standing in her way.

The Day I Washed My Face In The Toilet is a fast-paced tale about a girl trying to have a positive impact on her world and see social injustices corrected—with hilarious results, and one badly-mangled bridesmaid’s dress.

A Personal Note From The Author:

Unfortunately, I came up with the title of this book—and a pretty big chunk of the plot-line—the day I washed my face in a toilet. In my defense, we were living in the middle of nowhere, and a brutal storm had left us with no hydro, no heat, no lights and no running water for almost a week. I was cold and grimy, and by the fifth day I snapped. I pulled the top off the toilet tank and peered in. The water had been sitting there for days, so it smelled really funky. Also, every chain and bobbly thing in there was covered with a thick layer of (and here, I’m using the scientific term) bleck. Still, I was desperate. So I used the slimy toilet tank water and had what was probably the fastest sponge bath on record.

Sadly, the curry incident happened to me, too. Shortly before I boarded an eight-hour flight from England to Canada, a friend took me out for a huge curry feast. I’d never had curry, and my intestines weren’t sure what to do with the stuff, so they promptly rejected it. I developed a massive case of explosive curry farts. I kept my coat zipped up for the entire flight home, hoping that would hide the smell. It didn’t. Toxic gasses trickled out through the neck of the coat, assaulting me and all of the passengers who were stuck sitting around me. Ironically, the coat made the problem worse, because it made me sweat—I was leaking curry vapors out of every pore of my body. This book is a labor of love—but it’s laced with some of my most cringe-worthy experiences, too!

Hilarious and Touching Story!

Don't be deterred by the toilet, this story is a great little book! I absolutely LOVED the author's voice, written in the POV of a sarcastic, witty, self-depreciating teen girl with attitude and spunk. I pictured her as the smart teen on the TV show Modern Family.
Three siblings are shipped off to England for a family wedding. Mom will follow, but in the meantime, the kids will stay with a dotty, old Auntie Mame style grandma with cats, a huge dog and various friends and neighbors who will leave you chuckling and turning the pages. Toilet was a fun, light, read with a darling story and message about banding together to help someone in need.
Kearns did a great job of fleshing out the characters and keeping the pace cracking along. Most enjoyable! Thanks for my weekly laugh.

laugh out loud at the crazy family fun

Family members with different personalities, agendas, and quirks! Who couldn’t relate to that? If you haven’t been at odds with your siblings, then you were an only child. Even then you probably had a few tussles with your cousins, your aunt, etc.

Monica is the dependable child. She is obsessed with order and neatness. Her sister the fashion goddess is obsessed with her looks. Her brother the know-it-all is not so much obsessed, as possibly possessed. Mom is counting on Monica to get the three of them to England ahead of her and meet up with the eccentric grandmother.

This is a chance to laugh out loud at someone else’s family drama. This book is written so well that you are transported along with the misadventures, cringe at the misfortunes, and want to chase that crazy brother down.

This was a delight to read and I would recommend it to everyone of any age.

Laugh out loud!

This is a screechingly hilarious novel told from the point of view of self-centred teenager Monica. I laughed out loud in many places. The plot was water tight and the characters well drawn. You really feel as though you are in Monica's dysfunctional world. An excellent book and one to recommend to teenagers and desperately childish adults like me!
