Longman's costly oversights

This book is excellent, as are all the Toeic books that Longman publishes. One shortcoming is strident, however, and that is the absence of tapescripts at the back of the book. I can only postulate that this omission is designed to stop the Toeic aspirant from cheating, but it certainly makes the acquisition of this set of Toeic material both costly and cumbersome.

Efficient and effective!

This book has proven successful in preparing our students for the TOEIC exam as shown in our control exams for measuring language learning progress. I recommend it for intermediate level students. There is also an Introductory Course by the same author for Elementary Students which is as good as this one.

Ian Nathan, who lives and works in London, has been a film writer, producer, broadcaster and magazine editor for twenty years. Very enjoyable, if a little thin

In his foreword to Alien Vault, author Ian Nathan recounts his first experience with Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi / horror masterpiece. Right away this book struck a chord with me, because the film planted the same hook in me at almost the same age, with a key difference - I actually saw "Alien" during its original theatrical run in the summer of 1979 at the tender age of 8. The movie mesmerized and terrorized me and I loved it (the fact that I saw the movie in the theater at such an early age is, in my mind, not the fault of poor parenting but rather attributable to parental capitulation in the face of constant nagging - post "Star Wars," I was mad for anything that hinted of space adventure or SF).

I love many films in many ways, and it's hard (and really rather pointless) to try to identify any movie as my "favorite;" but "Alien" comes as close as any. In the 32 years since its release, I've probably seen it at least 30 times; I usually watch it at least once a year. The recent release of the film and its sequels on the Blu-Ray format was a major event for me.

So, with my bona fides as an "Alien" buff established, let me say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There are a few puzzling omissions (for example, Nathan completely ignores the fact that one of the original concepts for "Alien," a story called "B-17," was animated and then refitted with the story arc of the movie "Heavy Metal" for inclusion in that film). There may be little if any new ground broken with the book, but it would probably be hard to find any major new revelations on a three decade-old production. Having all of that information in a single volume with the durable presentation of this book is worthwhile enough; and in any case, there were enough interesting if small tidbits scattered through the text to make it a highly enjoyable read. I loved the ship blueprints and script pages. The original marketing concepts were a hoot. And I'm trying to find the perfect spot to put my Nostromo patch sticker.

Alien Vault is most likely best enjoyed by obsessives or semi-obsessives like me; but every book has its ideal audience. I have no idea how popular the original movie remains at large, and how many out there like me might love this book. But we know who we are, and for us, this is a must-have.

Great Insight Into The Origin of the Alien-verse

I must say that being a watcher of the Alien movies for the past 20-or-so years in videos, DVDs, multiple viewings on TV, I'm not really that educated in the intricate detailing of the Alien movie universe. Other than some well-known facts that four great directors directed the four movies (I won't count the AVP movies), H. R. Giger designed the original creature, and that it has gained an everlasting fandom among sci-fi fans, how the Alien movie idea came to be remained elusive for me. That is, until I read this book.

Some other reviewers said that this book contains things already discussed many, many times before elsewhere, but still for one latecomer like me remain fascinated to discover the real story of how the alien concept came to be. The book is filled with polaroids from the making of the movie. The retro feelings make you appreciate how the filmmaker went all out to make this film in the 70's. This was a time when cheesiness was still reigning and Star Wars was the new undisputed champion of blockbuster movies. They obviously took a leap faith in ushering Alien to the opposite tone of the cheery Star Wars.

The book comes with a slipcase and pouches filled with small goodies like the Nostromo logo sticker, blueprints of the spaceships, Giger's Alien designs, etc. Nice touches on the goodies, but I'm more into the book's information than these small gimmicks.

All in all, the Alien Vault is informative and inspiring without being too tedious. Though not perfect in the structuring the contents, it is a valuable resource to sci-fi fans in general, and especially the Alien xenomorph aficionados.

A fine book for a new fan, but old news to older ones.

I had only glanced through this book a few years ago, and liked what I saw. When a friend gave me a gift card, I decided to use it to purchase "Alien Vault" in the hopes that it would contain some new and interesting material about the production of one of my favorite films.

Unfortunately, if you're an avid Alien fan, there's very little original content. The author is clearly a devotee of the film, but it becomes clear very quickly that he did not do much research. Few of the photos were ones I'd never seen before, and the details of each chapter were quite scant, especially the evolution of the script and H.R. Giger's development of the creature. The inserts are unremarkable, and don't really add anything special to the package. The books skims over the surface, never digging deep enough, despite the wealth of material available.

If you're an Alien fan, and you've never read any behind-the-scenes material or watched any of the films with audio commentary, then you will enjoy this book. BUT, if you're already well-steeped in the lore of the franchise, you will read this book through and at the end say: "Yeah, what else?"

About the Author

Drew Ramsey, M.D., is a psychiatrist, author, and farmer. Dr. Ramsey is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University in New York and an attending psychiatrist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. His clinical work focuses on the treatment of depression and anxiety with a combination of psychotherapy, diet and lifestyle modification, and psychopharmacology. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Huffington Post, The Atlantic, Prevention, and Men's Journal, and he is the coauthor of The Happiness Diet. He lives in New York City with his wife and daughter.

Buy. This. Book.

I rarely review but need to this time. Dr Drew Ramsey is a genius! His book is full of invaluable information that is absolutely different from any health/diet book I've read! (I've read most of them) He has described in detail why we need to eat certain foods to feed our brain the essential nutrients it needs to keep us healthy. He tells secrets that will help stave off Alzheimers, protect from the negative effects of aging and in the process lose weight! I am lucky to already have tested some of the recipes. My favorites are the Quinoa-Mushroom Frittata, Cashew-Chocolate Smoothie, Crispy Shrimp with Greens and Beans and Rainbow Burgers with Golden Sweet Potato Fries! The recipes are delicious and certainly nutritious! I feel healthy. I Eat Complete! I highly recommend this book!

About the Author
Kregg P.J. Jorgenson spent seven years in the U.S. Army; three as an infantryman, four as a journalist. After surviving a number of missions as an LRRP with Hotel Company, 75th Infantry (Airborne), Jorgenson transferred to Alpha (AKA Apache) Troop, 1st of the 9th Air Cavalry unit, where he walked point for its reaction force, the Blues. He has the singular distinction of having been shot while on a patrol that was mounted to show TV journalist Richard Threlkeld what the "real war" was like, then being interviewed by Threlkeld as he was evacuated. He is also the author of Acceptable Loss: An Infantry Soldier's Perspective and MIA Rescue: LRRPs in Cambodia.

DEAD RECKONING

Perhaps one of the deadliest threats to anyone sta-tioned
in Vietnam during the war came from Viet Cong or North Vietnamese Army
mortar or Katyusha 122mm-rocket artillery fire. At any moment and,
seem-ingly, any facility, the "incoming" (as it was better known) could
rain down and wound or kill anyone within its deadly radius. In this
story, you'll come to bet-ter understand another aspect of that
frightening reality and, too, the terror of getting hit. In war, you
will die like a dog for no good reason.

Dong Ha, Vietnam

The North Vietnamese Army's Van An Rocket Ar-tillery Regiment had it in
for the Marine 3d Recon Bat-talion. At least, at times, it felt that
way. The base camp at Dong Ha seemed to be one of their favorite target
areas and, too, maybe one of their easiest. Dong Ha was located on
Highway 9, less than ten miles from the DMZ in the I Corps Military
Region, the northernmost of the four corps tactical zones into which
Vietnam was divided. The DMZ was the infamous and misnamed Demilitarized
Zone that separated North Vietnam from South Vietnam, and it was
anything but demilitarized. The North Vietnamese Army used it as a
springboard for attacks in I Corps, and since their rocket artillery
rounds could easily cover the distance, Dong Ha was not only a target of
choice for the NVA artillery gunners but a target of opportunity as
well.

This time, they were walking the Russian 122mm rockets into the base
with such precision that even the uninitiated could see it wasn't a
random attack. The deafening explosions of the forty-pound warheads
erupted in an evident pattern as specific sites were being targeted.
With their vast spy network throughout the re-gion, the Communist
gunners knew the Marine facility well and took full advantage of the
knowledge.

However, even before the first rocket slammed into the tents or
tin-roofed barracks hootches, and split sec-onds before the base camp's
warning siren began build-ing into a screaming wail, Sgt. James P.
Henderson recognized their distinctive whoosh, like a truck's tires at
high speed on a wet road, for what it was and yelled at his people to
get to the protective sandbagged bunkers outside.

"Incoming!" the wiry noncommissioned officer yelled, pulling Marines out
of the barracks and shoving them toward the nearest bunker, just around
the corner of the hootch. "Go! Go! Go!"

The rockets were falling in rapid succession, dancing across the base in
deadly, macabre steps. Whoomphs fol-lowed the screaming whooshes and the
thundering roars of secondary explosions that told of direct hits. Hot
shrapnel rained across the camp, ripping and tearing through anything
and anyone in its way.

Rising black plumes and the acrid, oily odor of burn-ing fuel confirmed
the NVA gunners' accuracy. Since the bases and camps were stationary,
the ranges had long been defined and plotted by the Viet Cong and NVA.
Be-sides, they'd had years of practice.

Another 122mm rocket slammed into the next hootch over, tearing through
the sheet-metal roofing and gutting the wood-frame building.

Someone was screaming for a corpsman, then the call was drowned out by
still another series of whoomphs and explosions. The impacts and
detonations sent tremors across the base.

His rifle in hand, Henderson grabbed his flak jacket and steel-pot
helmet and took off in a dead run, follow-ing the others. If a ground
attack followed, he would damn well be ready. The North Vietnamese Army
some-times attempted a ground assault after a shelling, hoping that the
Americans' defenses had been weakened or were inadequately manned.

Henderson had just turned the corner of his hootch and was within a few
feet of the bunker's opening when a rocket exploded a few yards behind
him. The blast slammed into his back, and the intense heat, splintered
metal, and concussion lifted him up off the ground forcefully and threw
him down limply like a discarded doll.

The pain was intense and overwhelming, and when Henderson tried to lift
himself up and turn over, his arms and legs wouldn't respond. They
couldn't. There was too much weight on his legs and back. Lying facedown
in the hard-packed orange earth, he wondered what had fallen on top of
him. Building debris, most likely. But why was it so heavy?

His breaths were shallow, and he was soon struggling for air, fighting a
dark current that threatened to sweep up and overpower him. His chest
burned, and the air that somehow squeezed through to his lungs only
fanned his pain. In the distance, someone was yelling for a corpsman,
but the voice seemed too far away to matter. He knew he was hurt, but he
couldn't determine how badly. What was on his back?

He couldn't see any debris, but then he couldn't focus either; every
time he opened his eyes, a searing light burned through his sockets. It
was too bright and blind-ing to let anything else in. Then, in an
instant, the light began to fade, and a shadowy world took its place
around him. He was fading into black.

Most of his hearing was lost, and what sound filtered through was
muffled by the blood he could feel flowing from his ears. He would learn
later that his eardrums were shattered. Between the shaking from the
follow-up explosions and the cool shuddering earth, he could feel the
burning pain of his broken body.

Something was flowing down the side of his face and spilling into his
mouth. The droplets tasted like warm copper droplets, and memory
recognized it instantly. It was blood. He wanted to spit it out but
couldn't even find the strength to do that. Instead, he managed to use
his tongue to push it through his lips, and it dribbled to the ground.
He could feel it pool in the soil beneath his cheek.

When he tried to call for help nothing came out. The shallow exhaled
breaths didn't allow words, and in a terrible, frightening instant, he
understood his fate. He was dying.

Panic began to take over, but it was too late for that, too. The shadows
grew darker, and the pain lessened, drifting off, actually leaving him
in the cold tide of dark-ness.

All around him, the rain of rockets fell, then finally danced off to
another part of the base. Through the earth, he felt their rumble
diminish, moving away in big, labored steps.

Moments later, it was still. Too still.

For what seemed like an eternity, there was nothing for Henderson. No
sudden rush of life's reruns or re-grets. Nothing but white noise and an
internal pounding that replaced the exploding artillery rounds. The
inter-nal pounding was his pulse, and he could sense that the beats were
lessening.

Then he still couldn't see, but he could feel someone at his side gently
turning him over, and he heard a yell, "Over here! Head wound!" The
Marine sergeant could barely hear the other wounded and dying Marines
cry-ing around him, but that was enough to bring back the panic.

"I can't get a pulse! Don't die on me, you son of a bitch!" he heard
that someone say as though in the dis-tance, and although Henderson
couldn't see the Marine shaking his head wearily or see the man's
blood-drenched hands, he could sense what was happening next as the man
lowered him back to the ground. "Ah, Christ!" the man said, distant and
faint.

"Don't go! I'm not dead!" Henderson yelled in his mind, only no one else
could hear. The back of his head was broken open where rocket shrapnel
had pushed his steel pot back into his skull like a baseball shattering
a window.

James P. Henderson's world and life were bleeding away, swirling
steadily toward a small opening of light propped against a dark sea
backdrop. He was being sucked into a whirlpool, and he fought it until
there was no choice but to spiral with it; he didn't have the strength,
and he realized it with a reluctant acceptance. He wouldn't go easily,
but he was going. Within sec-onds, he was gone.

A very funny book about the vietnam war

Admittedly, some of the stories contained in "Very Crazy G.I." are strange, some even incredible. But the whole collection of short stories almost oozes red dust and dense jungle. Sometimes touching on LRRP and Special Forces themes, at other times delving into pure myth. Make no mistake: This book is hysterically funny, from a military advisor teams field trip with reluctant ARVN troops, to the story about an R&R trip to Thailand. Spanning most of the war and a wide variety of themes, it's a smashing read! As diverse in origin as the subtitle: Beaucoup dien cai dau.

War Stories

I found this an entertaining read. Very different from the author's other books, this is a collection of short tales, or war stories, as you could imagine a couple of soldiers swapping over a few beers. Some are more believable than others and even the author mentions he is leaving it up to the reader to make up their own minds about the verasity of some of them. The story of the seamonster is pretty interesting and anyone who has read the book owes it to themselves to look up oarfish on the internet and take a look at the pictures. That is one freaky fish. I didn't even know about it until I read this book, imagine a couple of seamen spying this thing over 30 years ago. I know I'd still be telling tales of it today.

Kregg does it again

I think that this a very god book, a series of short stories about the vietnam war, one or two off them are perhaps " non-confirme-able", but who cares, just as long as it is a good storie.
I very much enjoyed the R-R storie to Thailand; revenge is to be enjoyed cold.
Also the story about marine SGT Henderson, that died and diden't
send chills up and down my spine.
Kregg has a way with frases and words, especialy his funny and self-ironic way of decribing himself and his conversion with all those who contributed stories to his book, he is very much the
Wiseguy he always describes himself as.
I can highly recommend this book to anyone.

About the Author

Diane Teare is a professional in the networking, training, and e-learning fields. She has more than 20 years of experience in designing, implementing, and troubleshooting network hardware and software and has also been involved in teaching, course design, and project management. She has extensive knowledge of network design and routing technologies and is an instructor with one of the largest authorized Cisco Learning Partners. She was recently the director of e-learning for the same company, where she was responsible for planning and supporting all the company’s e-learning offerings in Canada, including Cisco courses. Diane was part of the team that developed the latest version of the BSCI course. She has a bachelor’s degree in applied science in electrical engineering (BASc) and a master’s degree in applied science in management science (MASc). She is a certified Cisco Systems instructor and currently holds her CCNP and CCDP certifications. She coauthored the Cisco Press titlesCampus Network Design Fundamentals and the first two editions of this book; and edited CCDA Self-Study: Designing for Cisco Internetwork Solutions (DESGN) and Designing Cisco Networks.

 

Catherine Paquet has in-depth knowledge of security systems, remote access, and routing technology. She is a CCSP, a CCNP, and a CCSI with one of the largest Cisco Learning Partners. She started her internetworking career as a LAN manager, moved to MAN manager, and eventually became the nationwide WAN manager with a federal agency. Prior to starting Netrisec Inc., a network security consultancy, Catherine was the director of technical resources for a Cisco Learning Partner. Catherine currently works on network design and implementation projects and lectures on topics related to security frameworks, regulations, and return on security investments. In 2002 and 2003, she volunteered with the U.N. mission in Kabul, Afghanistan, to train Afghan public servants in the area of networking. Catherine has a master’s degree in business administration with a major in management information systems (MBA [MIS]). She coauthored the Cisco Press titles Campus Network Design Fundamentals, The Business Case for Network Security: Advocacy, Governance, and ROI, and the first two editions of this book, and edited Building Cisco Remote Access Networks.

Great book to start your BSCI studies

There are two main advantages that this book has over others: first, it is very accessible for beginners and second, it has actual network building exercises. This really helps to get your study going. I tried the Certification Guide first but just couldn't get into the material, I mean the information was there but it just wasn't clicking with me. Then I read in the Certification Guide's preface that Self-Study Guide is a prerequisite for it, so I got it and I'm glad that I did.

This book has a lot of relevant information worded in a way that it is easy to understand and retain. For instance, it describes hybrid protocol as "one that sends info about changes (like link state) but only to neighbors (like distance vector)". Brilliant. Some materials I've read don't even bother to describe what a hybrid proto is, only that is a mix (duh) of the link state and distance vector. As a beginner, to me it is really important to have the material explained in a simple and an easy to remember way.

Second, exercises. Other books sometimes have them but they are always like an afterthought and usually not interesting enough to keep your attention. Sometimes, as it is with independent vendors, you are supposed to follow the network that the guy is building but it is so incoherent - in one chapter he does one thing, then in the next chapter he has a different topology, etc. This book however consistently builds its topology starting from chapter 2 and really applies the configs learned in chapters. Some have complained that the network that is being built in this book requires over 11 of 2800 routers (very expensive), well I'm happy to inform you that 1721s can be had for $60 each, they are small (one Fa and two serial slots each, that's all you need for this book), and they have the 12.4 advanced IP services IOS. Just add cabling and serial cards, they also can be had cheaply. I wish I had discovered 1721s before I bought a bunch of ancient overpriced crap 2600s for my CCNA studies. So if you don't have the Packet Tracer just get a bunch of 1721s, it is an investment well worth it.

Poorly written..

i just wish to balance out these reviews a little. i agree with a previous reviewer that said this book is poorly written. sometimes when i read material from this book that i am already comfortable with, i'm left with a blank stare and a "whaaaaaat?" in my head. i will be avoiding these authors in the future. also, note that this exam will be retiring in early 2010, i believe.
