“Merton gives us the idea that it is OK to travel the long path…to be confused, quirky, a doubter…. He leads us to believe that maybe we are better than we think we are—if we want to be better.”
—from the introduction
In his search for God, Thomas Merton wrote on timeless themes and questions we still wrestle with today. Simplicity, nonviolence, honesty, mystery, and even death and eternity—these topics and more permeated Merton’s writings. This book distills the wisdom of Merton’s dozens of books and voluminous journals into the enduring themes most relevant to readers today.

Review
Linus Mundy does a masterful job of sifting through a spiritual master's journals and giving us wisdom to live by. Even if you've read Merton before you will appreciate and benefit from the profound insights in this gem of a book. Highly recommended.
—Michael Leach, author of Why Stay Catholic? Unexpected Answers to a Life-Changing Question

Simply Merton is like a conversation with a good friend about a shared passion for seeking God through the written word. This book relates not only Merton’s lifelong discernment by examining the recurring themes from his journals, the author also invites his readers to join him in delving into the same themes along the path of discerning God’s presence in all our lives. Like so many other readers and seekers whose lives Merton touched, Linus Mundy identifies on many levels with this Trappist monk. With him, we discover that Merton’s search is ours. His destiny awaits us all—quite simply.
—Br. Francis de Sales Wagner, O.S.B., Saint Meinrad Archabbey

Simply Merton has made me think more than any book I have read in ten years. Linus Mundy presents Merton in a clear, reader-friendly way, but nothing that is Merton will leave you with simple answers. Mundy shows Merton opening fifteen doors that lead into the vast space of God. As each chapter ends, you realize you have just found a new beginning. Then you know how Merton felt.
—Father David M. Knight, author of Nuts & Bolts of Daily Spirituality: Practical Steps to Draw Closer to God

About the Author
Linus Mundy created the CareNotes line of booklets, and has written many of the titles in that series as well as in the Elf-Help Books series. He was the director of publications for Abbey Press, and prior to that, director of marketing for St. Anthony Messenger Press. He is also the author of A Retreat with Desert Masters: Thirsting for the Reign of God; A Man's Guide to Prayer: New Ideas, Prayers & Meditations from Many Traditions; and A Retreat with Benedict and Bernard: Seeking God Alone—Together.

Good overview

I enjoyed reading the author's highlighting of some of Merton's important and recurring themes. At times, however, I felt a bit confused as to whether the written summaries were in Merton's words or a commentary by the author. I would have liked more of Merton's own wording..there was some but I wanted more. The author has a very deep appreciation of Merton's significance as a spiritual person and prolific writer.

Arthur Brown Jr.: Progressive Classicist (Classical America Series in Art and Architecture), by Jeffrey T. Tilman

Arthur Brown Jr. (1874-1957) is one of the most important, yet underpublished, architects of the twentieth century.

Celebrated by his peers for such masterpieces as the City Hall, War Memorial Opera House, Temple Emanu-El, and Coit Tower in San Francisco; the Pasadena City Hall; and the Labor-ICC block of the Federal Triangle in Washington, DC, Brown epitomized the idea that architecture not only houses society’s daily rituals and defining events but also can itself shape the sociopolitical landscape of America. Arthur Brown Jr.: Progressive Classicist, the first full study of Brown within his architectural and social context, unifies the varied strands of the architect’s life, from the architectural forms and methods of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris to the reforming spirit and self-reliant confidence of San Francisco after the earthquake and fire of 1906 to the challenging economics and changing aesthetics of machine-age America. It details the development of Brown’s major works and many other civic, commercial, religious, academic, and residential buildings. It chronicles his unflagging commitment to the classical tradition, which he employed in contemporary, forward-looking institutional buildings that emphasized continuity with the past while meeting the needs of the future. To Brown, the classical tradition was not a sacrosanct, unchanging body of knowledge; it was an expanding and evolving set of ideas about architectural design that permitted, and even demanded, change as new conditions and technologies were developed. Arthur Brown Jr. is a fascinating look at the man-captivated by the classical movement and obsessed with the slightest architectural detail-and at his buildings, at once canonical and inventive and singularly American. 30 color 200 b/w photos

Thorough and excellent
By tgm
This book is meticulously researched and organized. Anyone interested in Brown, history, architecture, classicism in America and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts should have this book nearby. I have been the US General Services Administration historic preservation representative for the Federal Triangle in Washington DC since 1998 and have turned repeatedly to Dr. Tilman's book since first published for information on the design and construction of the ICC/Connecting Wing/Labor complex, the influence of the atelier Laloux and Brown's other work in California. Dr. Tilman's research has proven even more productive than an extensive Historic Structures Report for this complex completed in 1988. Hats off to Dr. Tilman!

The penultimate biography of Arthur Brown, Jr.
By David Arbogast
Had Arthur Brown practiced architecture in New York CIty we would have seen many more biographies of him and his work by now. As it was, he chose to practice in his beloved San Francisio, bringing to it works of Classical grandeur such as the City Hall complex. He developed a nation-wide reputation in twentieth-century Classical architecture which, sadly, was eclipsed by the Modernists of the late twentieth century. Fortunately we now have this superlative monograph on him and his works. It is quite thorough, with a clear and lucid text accompanied with wonderful illustrations. Despite its relatively high price, the book is highly recommended for those with an interest in Classical architecture as practiced in the twentieth century outside of its center in New York City.

BEAUX ART MASTER
By Shannon Deason
I have alway's thought the San Francisco City Hall was spectacular, as impressive inside as out. It is great to have a book on the architect of that building and many more, his buildings in the Federal Triangle are wonderful, classic, yet functional. This book has fantastic images and the text is fascinating. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in spectacular architecture in the classical style.

The Silent War Within: Biochemistry & Legal Research on Parasitic Fungi (The Most Common, The Most Deadly) (Volume 1), by Jane Lim

This book includes the author's interesting scientific finding that reverses the present research conclusion about how to traditionally inhibit tumor growth and her own experiments and testimonies on parasitic fungi.
This book is written for healthy families who wish to consciously stay healthy or take care of patients; for unhealthy families and patients who are diagnosed with autoimmune diseases or who struggle with their unknown illnesses; for litigants who were forced to abandon their houses due to mold invasions;  for healthcare providers who failed to find a cause of patients' illnesses;  and for personal injury or medical malpractice lawyers who are representing ill clients who are struggling with "The Most Common, The Most Deadly" fungal infections.
This book is introduced as a landmark to inspire people including cancer patients and healthcare providers about the anciently misdiagnosed illness "Cancer", which is caused by parasitic fungi, is misdiagnosed as flu or a cold in the beginning, and is erroneously treated with wrong medications in the middle of the progress only to discover that the cancer is treated by antifungal medications in the end.
This book is intended to educate readers about parasitic fungi that mutate fungal genes to survive in the hosts yielding cancerous cells and that the  parasitic fungi are the cause of autoimmune diseases.
The main goal of this book is to help children and families who are left behind without treatments under the guise of a false psychological theory "Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy (faking illness)".
This book is intended to enlighten readers about risks of parasitic fungi that destruct health, homes, offices, schools, hospitals, and further family relationships, and that construct expensive lawsuits, social distrusts, unnecessary public and medical expenses and secondary victims. This book is aimed at past, present, and future patients who are programmed to fail to get a medical help for early cancer test and treatment under the present insurance policies, immunity laws, and medical malpractice laws that govern millions of health insurance policyholders, healthcare providers, and government-funded medical facilities.
The author discusses why GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) Vitamins cause antifungal and antibiotic resistances and why GMO Vitamins may initiate or exacerbate autoimmune diseases.
This book discusses "causes and effects" and "possible treatments" of autoimmune diseases that are caused by an untreated fungal infection.  This book explains why the early signs of autoimmune diseases are neglected either by patients or by healthcare providers, how autoimmune diseases are initiated by a fungal mutation, why the autoimmune diseases respond to antifungal agents, and how curable diseases turn to incurable diseases.
This book explains why fungal disruptions in human metabolisms result in "the various names of illnesses" in the beginning and "autoimmune diseases" in the end.
This book suggests that a high level of LDL Cholesterol (known as bad Cholesterol) of patients may be a consequence of chronic and acute fungal infections and the LDL Cholesterol may be a fungal sterol that was horizontally transferred from the parasitic fungi that mutate their genes in the hosts to survive from the hosts' antibodies.
This book explains how harmful acids are produced when parasitic fungi are hosted by humans and animals, how alcohol (fungal urine) and tobaccos may chemically make more Ergosterol or Lanosterol in the hosts and how patients can repair their damaged cells.
This book explains how cancer tumors and cysts can be treated and how female patients can resume their menopause and become pregnant.
This book is not a substitute of a medical diagnosis or a prescription to treat their illness.

I am VERY PLEASED with the high quality research information in this book. It brings it down to the FACTS. No medical person who has ANY chemistry class can argue with facts - and Jane Lim presents them in an understandable manner. If you have found that your health has deteriorated she has found how to turn your chemistry around.

The Fourth Wish: The Art of Wishing: Book 2, by Lindsay Ribar

"Genies for the modern age, with passion, darkness, and heart. I loved it!"--Tamora Pierce, author of Mastiff (praise for The Art of Wishing)

Here's what Margo McKenna knows about genies: She's seen Aladdin more times than she can count; she's found a magic genie ring and made her three allotted wishes; she's even fallen head over heels in love with Oliver, the cute genie whose life she saved by fighting off another genie. But none of this prepared her for the shock of becoming a genie herself.

Everything Margo's taken for granted--graduating high school, going to college, hating math, performing in the school musical, even being a girl--is in question. Just at a time when she's trying to figure out who she wants to be, Margo is forced to become whomever her master wants. But Margo is also coming into a power she never imagined she'd have. How will she reconcile the two? And where will she and Oliver stand when she's done?

Fans of Every Day and Anna and the French Kiss will love this romantic, magical, and surprising conclusion to The Art of Wishing.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—After taking a fourth wish from her genie-turned-boyfriend Oliver in order to save his life, Margo McKenna has become a genie herself. Picking up right from where The Art of Wishing (Dial, 2013) left off, Margo's first order of business is to find Oliver—until she feels the call of her first master, the school jerk, Ryan Weiss. Margo learns the ropes of geniehood, including how to navigate wishes that affect her BFF Naomi, a whole new body, Oliver's whole new body, and how to control her magic, all while still trying to live out her old teenage human life. Throw in romance and drama, and The Fourth Wish is smoothed into a nearly realistic YA fantasy novel. Ribar has delivered fans a fun romantic read with some deliciously exciting paranormal elements (shape-shifting anyone?) while casually tackling bisexuality, consent, and the importance of balancing power with humanity. A strong sequel.—Emily Moore, Camden County Library System, NJ

Review
"Ribar deals with surprisingly heavy themes in this sequel, despite the lighter-than-air premise, including the pressure to conform, the construction of self and the ever-evolving nuance of what is the "right" thing. Despite its fantastic drapery, the truths this novel reveals are so real it may even make readers a bit uncomfortable--that's quite an achievement." — Kirkus Reviews

"Ribar has delivered fans a fun romantic read with some deliciously exciting paranormal elements (shape-shifting anyone?) while casually tackling bisexuality, consent, and the importance of balancing power with humanity." — School Library Journal

PRAISE FOR THE ART OF WISHING:
"Stands head and shoulders above the competition because of its main character Margo . . . a decisive, strong-willed heroine."--Tor.com

"For anyone who thought Disney's Aladdin was the last word on genies, think again."--Booklist

"[With] a genie like no other . . . this lighthearted book is a well-rounded combination of humor, romance and paranormal suspense, with likable characters and easy-to-believe dialogue."--Kirkus

"The love between a musician and her genie is so bittersweet, so utterly human, it makes magic feel real--a feat all paranormal romances attempt, but few achieve."--Jeri Smith-Ready, author of Shine

"Rich with romance, magic, and action, this novel will captivate teens."--School Library Journal

A fantastic follow-up
By Dahlia Adler
THE ART OF WISHING was my most pleasant surprise of 2013, given that I'm not typically a paranormal YA reader, and I was dying to see if I could possibly love THE FOURTH WISH as much. The answer is hellllll yes. Not only do I remain utterly in love with Margo and Oliver, both separate and apart, but this book is full of themes and discussions that kept making me think "Really? You just did that in a cute genie book? Really?" Consent. Bisexuality. Gender fluidity. All these things are somehow covered with care and depth in THE FOURTH WISH in a way that put me in serious awe of Ribar's skills and convinced me there's pretty much nothing she could attempt for her next book that I wouldn't read.

Review: The Fourth Wish by Lindsay Ribar
By Jen @ Pop! Goes The Reader
Please Note: This review will contain spoilers for the first novel in this series, The Art of Wishing.

“There was only pain, at first – the pain of my magic breaking me into a collection of atoms, getting ready to make me into something new. It was painful, but I knew it was necessary.
I just wished I could make it happen faster.”

One choice can change everything. No-one knows this more than eighteen year old Margo McKenna. After choosing to cast a fourth wish in order to save Oliver from his dangerous, megalomaniacal ex-boyfriend, Xavier, and circumvent the multitude of differences that threatened to separate she and Oliver forever, Margo is transformed into a genie and life, as she knows it, will never be the same again. New body. New powers. New rules. Ready or not, before she can say ch-ch-changes, Margo has been transformed and her spirit vessel, her favourite red guitar pick, is discovered by her first master. Worst still, the lucky new owner of said pick is none other than notorious womanizer and fellow classmate, Ryan Weiss. As her time in the theatre has taught her, however, the show must go on. Now, Margo must attempt to satisfy the wishes of Ryan – all of which seem disconcertingly focused on her best friend, Naomi – while simultaneously attempting to understand and control new, monumental powers the likes of which she has never known. Straddling two opposing worlds, Margo will ultimately be forced to confront her most difficult decision yet: Where it is she truly belongs.

“I’d had nightmares like this, over and over throughout most of junior high, before I’d conquered my stage fright: It’s the opening night of the musical, and I’m supposed to play the lead…only there hadn’t been any rehearsals, and I don’t know my lines.
And just like in the dreams, there was only one thing I could do.
Wing it.”

Move over, Aladdin, because Lindsay Ribar is single handedly redefining the genie sub-genre for a new generation! Regular visitors of Pop! Goes The Reader will know that I rarely, if ever, read paranormal or fantasy stories. Were all the novels in these aforementioned genres half as smart and entertaining as Ribar’s magical duology, however, I can assure you that this would not be the case. I’ve made it no secret that The Art of Wishing holds a very special place in my heart – I even went so far as to declare it the best young adult debut novel I read in 2013. On a personal, sentimental level, The Art Of Wishing was one of the first books I reviewed on Pop! Goes The Reader but, more than that, it was (and still is) a thoroughly enjoyable, memorable narrative that remained with me long after I turned the final page. Given the vast array of novels I read on a regular basis, it’s not uncommon for stories to begin to blend together or fade from my memory entirely. Not so with this series, however. Thankfully, the author does not disappoint in this immensely moving follow-up novel that will challenge reader’s notions of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ in a thoroughly modern, diverse tale that confronts issues of power, consent, identity and sexuality and the ethical complexities inherent in each. Magical, enchanting, and far superior to its peers, The Art Of Wishing and The Fourth Wish are two novels that should not be missed or ignored under any circumstances.

“I wondered in NYU offered a major in being a genie. I could take classes in how not to flicker in front of people. I could minor in shapeshifting.”

While The Fourth Wish begins precisely where The Art Of Wishing left off, from there the two novels diverge quite sharply in a number of respects. Nowhere is this more evident than in the case of Margo’s development as a character. In The Art of Wishing, Margo begins as a character firmly in control, a strong, confident friend, dedicated student and passionate performer and musician with clear ambitions and her future all but laid out before her. Because Ribar’s debut is primarily action and plot-based, Margo’s personal journey is relatively simple and straightforward, with the focus being placed on her growing acceptance of the role of magic in the everyday world and her struggle to understand and act upon her burgeoning feelings for Oliver. In The Fourth Wish, however, the scope of Ribar’s writing has grown much more ambitious and intricate, seeing the author use Margo’s transformation and inherited abilities as a genie to explore a number of complex societal and moral issues including power, consent, identity and sexuality. While Margo was aware that casting a fourth wish would lead to her metamorphosis into a paranormal being, the realities of being a genie in a practical sense are far from what she once imagined. An entity whose sole purpose is to grant the wishes and fulfill the desires of another, Margo initially struggles with the scope and limits of her power and its affect on her own will, freedom of choice, and autonomy, both physical and emotional. How far should one go to ensure the happiness and satisfaction of one’s master? At what cost are these wishes achieved? What does one do when said wishes run contrary to one’s own moral compass? Likewise, Margo and Oliver’s capacity to shapeshift, an ability inherent in their role as genies, raises a number of interesting questions both in regard to their individual identities as well as their romantic relationship as a couple. Are the personas they adopt for each new master an aspect, however minute, of their own identity, or a manifestation of their master’s deepest desires? How does one love a being whose physical identity is forever in flux? Once again Ribar uses a paranormal premise to inspire a dialogue about relevant societal issues, in this case the fluidity of sexuality and the nature of true love. The author deftly weaves together these and other elaborate societal and ethical issues, all while furthering Margo’s own personal development, making this novel the perfect choice for classrooms and book clubs interested in inspiring intelligent, spirited discussion.

“You read romance novels?”
“I went through a phase in junior high school. Totally Naomi’s fault. Point is, I know how this works. Heaving bosom, throbbing manhood, all that.”
“Throbbing? Really? You want me to throb?”
“You throb,” I said, heading for the stairs. “I’ll heave.”
“That’s possibly the least sexy phrase I’ve ever heard in my life.”

Predictably, as a couple Margo and Oliver are just as wonderful, if not more so, in The Fourth Wish. What I love most about this couple, apart from their scorching chemistry and playful banter, is how Ribar uses their romantic relationship to subvert expectations and play with traditional archetypes at every available opportunity. Their feelings for one another are almost immediately and extremely strong. So much so, in fact, that Margo is willing to sacrifice her mortality in order to save Oliver from Xavier and bridge the many differences that threaten to separate them. Under normal circumstances this would be an egregious example of the much-dreaded ‘instalove’ that would have drastically reduced my enjoyment of the novel. In the case of Margo and Oliver, however, this didn’t bother me, not the least of which is because these two characters are too charismatic and loveable to begrudge anything. Putting that aside, I appreciate that the author does not use their feelings as a plot device to resolve conflict or tie up loose ends. If anything, Margo and Oliver’s feelings for one another complicate matters further, particularly in The Fourth Wish, where Oliver is acting both as Margo’s boyfriend and mentor, helping to instruct her in her power and responsibility as a genie. This changes the dynamic between the two drastically and creates some new issues around which the couple have to navigate. While their path to a happy ending is anything but smooth or straight forward, I appreciated the work that Margo and Oliver put into their relationship in order to make it work. There was one scene in particular that I found refreshing, in which Margo and Oliver have a frank, open discussion about their prior sexual experience (or lack thereof) and their expectations moving forward in their own relationship. This sets an excellent example for young readers about being open and honest with their partners when preparing to engage in a physical relationship and was a welcome (and much-needed!) change of pace. Bravo, Ms. Ribar.

“Ciarán-Gwen-Alicia-Oliver,” I whispered, pretending I could see all of him, too.
“What do you wish of me?” he asked.
I looked at him. He looked at me. We were a live wire. An explosion waiting to happen.
I said, “Everything.”

I don’t want to live in a world where everyone hasn’t read The Art Of Wishing and The Fourth Wish, Ribar’s smart, spirited, effervescent duology that will steal your heart and inspire you to believe in magic again. My only disappointment is that this series cannot continue on forever. While I was no doubt eager to read the follow-up to one of the most memorable and enjoyable novels I read last year, it was bittersweet having to say goodbye to Margo, Oliver, and a diverse, creative world that has come to mean so much to me. I have absolutely no doubt that this book, and by extension this series, will remain in my memory, and my heart, for many years to come. While it might not have Arabian nights, magic carpet rides or an adorable simian sidekick, The Fourth Wish is something infinitely better, with a cast of charming, captivating characters, creative world building that puts a unique twist on traditional genie lore and clever social commentary that will challenge your accepted notions of power, consent, identity and sexuality. You ain’t never read a book like this.

Utterly Charming
By Stormy
The Fourth Wish dives right into the story–we’re thrown pretty much right into where The Art of Wishing left off. For that reason, The Fourth Wish doesn’t feel so much as a sequel as just part two. While this sometimes bothers me in books(I feel strongly about books having their own story arcs), for some reason The Fourth Wish didn’t feel that way at all. Instead, I found The Fourth Wish to be a great wrap-up on Margo’s story.

As Margo is now a new genie, she struggles to figure out how to balance her genie life and her human life. As a genie, Margo has to take whatever shape will make her master feel comfortable, grant wishes even when they have affects on the people she cares about, and be at someone’s beck and call. As Margo tries to remain tied to her human life, she finds the balance between her friends, family, and things she cares about thrown off balance. How can she think of going to college when she has to deal with all her genie things? And then, of course, there’s the nature of Margo and Oliver’s relationship. Now that they’re both genies, some things are easier for the two of them, but at the same time it also makes their lives harder as they keep changing at the whims of their masters.

Despite all that’s going down in The Fourth Wish, it never feels like too much is happening. There’s a lot of introspection on Margo’s part, which is to be expected. While it may have been slightly annoying to see Margo struggle with her new life, I found it refreshing. There’s a learning curve to being a genie, after all, and it makes sense that Margo doesn’t just find herself immediately comfortable in her new identity, especially as her identity keeps changing due to her genie nature.

I find that often when books have a magical element, the magical world is always considered superior to the “normal” world, without any thought as to how or why that is. That’s why I appreciated how much Margo was willing to fight for her human life in The Fourth Wish. She enjoyed her magic at times and hated it at others, when it caused her to do things she didn’t want to do, but the portrayal was all very balanced. She wasn’t ready to just uproot her entire life to become a genie, and I really appreciated that. There’s always a sense of dismay when a character abandons the real world for the magical one and the magical one is “better”–it leaves the readers in a world that’s portrayed as empty of adventure. Which is why seeing Margo clinging to her human life was so refreshing and made me happy.

Of course, the romance in The Fourth Wish is quite strong considering what happened at the end of The Art of Wishing. Now that Margo and Oliver are both genies and they’re past that initial stage, their relationship takes a turn for the more serious. They have cute moments, too, but on the whole this book has a shift to a darker and more serious tone. However, it’s still endearing to watch Oliver and Margo navigate their relationship, especially given the new parameters of the world. The Fourth Wish delves into the nature of gender and identity a bit, and the exploration is all done thoughtfully and considerately.

In the end, The Fourth Wish was a great conclusion to Margo’s story. It had the cute moments from the first book, but manage to shift it’s focus to more serious topics well, including things like identity and the struggle Margo felt between her genie life and her human life. The magic system in The Fourth Wish was explained a bit better, and it’s clear that everything in this book was very thought-out. I just can’t help but to be charmed by this sequel.

Consistent with previous editions of An Introduction to Physical Science, the goal of the new Thirteenth edition is to stimulate students' interest in and gain knowledge of the physical sciences. Presenting content in such a way that students develop the critical reasoning and problem-solving skills that are needed in an ever-changing technological world, the authors emphasize fundamental concepts as they progress through the five divisions of physical sciences: physics, chemistry, astronomy, meteorology, and geology. Ideal for a non-science majors course, topics are treated both descriptively and quantitatively, providing instructors the flexibility to emphasize an approach that works best for their students.

Title says it all, ordered a book, or at least the item linked to a book and got a slip of paper instead with a digital download link to google drive. This is super illegal just so you know, a federal judge ruled it is illegal to sell used digital copies of books. E-books are considered an original version of the author’s work. If you’ve already bought a version and then sell it to someone else, you’re making an illegal copy of the original work

From Booklist
*Starred Review* It’s fairly evident that this is a collection of blogs, loosely strung together, united in their varied perspectives on start-ups, CEO-dom, and business in general. Though Horowitz is a cofounder of Andreessen Horowitz and his credentials reside mainly in Silicon Valley, he’s imparted some valuable insight on hard lessons learned that apply to any manager, whether in the executive suite or not. As with most experiential books, it is all about him—but it’s written in such an engaging and universally acceptable manner that no one could object. Leave aside his background, for the moment. Who would realize, for instance, that executives worry about things like initiating layoffs, hiring the right people, training, and minimizing politics, among others? It’s a refreshingly honest take, and his colorful (and, yes, profanity-laced) language breaks down any other misperceptions about the role and the person. Plus, his imagination is compelling, such as the comparisons between peacetime and wartime CEOs: Peacetime CEO always has a contingency plan. Wartime CEO knows that sometimes you gotta roll a hard six. After all, the success equation is easy: the hard thing is getting it done. --Barbara Jacobs

Review
“More than any other business book released this year, “Hard Things” gives an insider’s perspective on what it’s like to lead and scale a startup.” (--Business Insider's Best Business Books of 2014)

“This is easily one of the essential books every business leader should read if they’re looking for proven and honest management advice.” (--Entrepreneur's 25 Amazing Business Books from 2014)

“The most valuable book on startup management hands down” (PandoDaily)

“There is more than enough substance in Mr. Horowitz’s impressive tome to turn it into a leadership classic.” (The Economist)

From the Back Cover

A lot of people talk about how great it is to start a business, but only Ben Horowitz is brutally honest about how hard it is to run one.

In The Hard Thing About Hard Things, Ben Horowitz, cofounder of Andreessen Horowitz and one of Silicon Valley's most respected and experienced entrepreneurs, draws on his own story of founding, running, selling, buying, managing, and investing in technology companies to offer essential advice and practical wisdom for navigating the toughest problems business schools don't cover. His blog has garnered a devoted following of millions of readers who have come to rely on him to help them run their businesses. A lifelong rap fan, Horowitz amplifies business lessons with lyrics from his favorite songs and tells it straight about everything from firing friends to poaching competitors, from cultivating and sustaining a CEO mentality to knowing the right time to cash in.

His advice is grounded in anecdotes from his own hard-earned rise—from cofounding the early cloud service provider Loudcloud to building the phenomenally successful Andreessen Horowitz venture capital firm, both with fellow tech superstar Marc Andreessen (inventor of Mosaic, the Internet's first popular Web browser). This is no polished victory lap; he analyzes issues with no easy answers through his trials, including

  • demoting (or firing) a loyal friend;
  • whether you should incorporate titles and promotions, and how to handle them;
  • if it's OK to hire people from your friend's company;
  • how to manage your own psychology, while the whole company is relying on you;
  • what to do when smart people are bad employees;
  • why Andreessen Horowitz prefers founder CEOs, and how to become one;
  • whether you should sell your company, and how to do it.

Filled with Horowitz's trademark humor and straight talk, and drawing from his personal and often humbling experiences, The Hard Thing About Hard Things is invaluable for veteran entrepreneurs as well as those aspiring to their own new ventures.

Entrepreneurial Review
By Marco Garcia
Before I start reviewing “The Hard thing about Hard Things” by Ben Horowitz, allow me to briefly explain what entrepreneurial thinking means to me. When asked to define entrepreneurial thinking, I answered by saying, “it is a mindset that embraces self-evaluation and creativity, and always tends to action.” In other words, an effective entrepreneur is always assessing himself to understand who he is, what he can (and cannot) do, and whom he knows (and counts on) so that he may creatively and rigorously devise a plan of action. Of course, there is much more to entrepreneurial thinking than my definition encompasses. Here is a couple of key criteria that I will also use to review the book: (1) effectual reasoning, and the (2) stewardship principle.

Entrepreneurial Thinking Definition
Ben Horowitz is a great entrepreneur according to my definition. Throughout his book his demonstrates (1) self-awareness and (2) creativity, and (3) how he put these into action.

Firstly, self-awareness. In the first chapter, “From Communist to Venture Capitalist” he explains who he is, where he comes from, and what he knows. He explains that “being scared doesn’t mean [being] gutless.” Having enough confidence in yourself to be bold is a key aspect of entrepreneurship; he displayed a great deal of boldness when he bought tangram to secure business with EDS. Then, Ben continues to tell us about his communist background, and how that is an advantage: “I realized that embracing the unusual parts of my background would be the key to making it through. It would be those things that I would bring to the table that nobody else had.” Lastly, he explains his mindset in terms of the following four criteria, which helped him immensely throughout his career: (1) to separate facts from perspective, (2) to “turn your s*** in” which means to be responsible for yourself and your work, (3) to not rely on first impressions, especially those based on appearances, and (4) to “look at the world through priorities.” It is therefore clear from chapter 1 that Ben Horowitz knows himself very well, and because he does, he is both confident and prepared to push himself to the limit.

Secondly, creativity. There are many examples of creativity in the book, but I’ll point to one in particular that shows rigorous creativity. After LoudCloud achieved a period of stability, most CEOs would try to remain in that state, but Ben thought differently. He asked himself, “What are we [LoudCloud] not doing?” The answer was well fought, but it eventually came out: they are not being a software company. And so, Ben rigorously devised a plan to save his and his employee’s careers. After selling LoudCloud, he would start a software company called Opsware and focus on systems automatization. To come up with this decision shows how creativity may be the answer to a struggle. Sometimes it is better to think of alternative solutions than just going forward or backwards, and this is exactly what Ben demonstrates time after time in his book – of course, assuming that everything he says he did is true.

Lastly, action. At this point I am sure that you have noticed that Ben is a man of action – whenever he says something he immediate acts upon it – but I’ll elaborate to further prove this. To save LoudCloud from going bankrupt, he only had two months to resolve his company’s problems in order to save business with his biggest client, EDS. He did, and on top of that was also able to start a group of ten engineers on a project named “Oxide,” whose goal was to separate the opsware software from LoudCloud. Ben did all of this in the 2 months period he was given, meaning that he – and his company – did not wasting any time. Ben asked his employees to come at 8am and leave at 10pm everyday (of course he also stayed those hours). He made sure that everyone worked diligently when they had to “turn their s*** in.” They accumulated enough momentum during the beginning of the 2-month rally to carry them throughout. So when the time ran out, Ben had successfully saved his company and business with EDS. That is why action – and traction – should always be the result of self-awareness and creativity.

Effectual Reasoning
Effectual reasoning has three main principles: the (1) bird in the hand, which means understanding the resources that you have at your disposal, (2) crazy quilt, which means building from the bottom up with an end goal in mind, and (3) pilot in the plane, which means that you want to be in control but not always have all the information. In his book, Ben doesn’t talk explicitly about these principles, but he definitely demonstrates them.

(1) Bird in the Hand. Ben went to college during the computer boom in Silicon Valley. When and where he studied (the resources) provided him a key advantage over other competitors because he had the knowledge to tap into a market that was underdeveloped and growing exponentially. Moreover, he understood that that point in time would also produce people of likeminded prospective. And so, Ben was able to team up with exceptional individuals such as Marc Andreessen (smartest person, according to Ben), Scott Kupor (director of finance), Mark Cranney (head of sales), Shannon Callahan (head of recruiting and HR), Margit Wennmachers (sultan of networking), and Frank Chen (head of product management) to name a few. This is how Ben demonstrates using the resources available to him.

(2) Crazy quilt. Ben’s end goal was to become a successful CEO, but he didn’t know how to get there. And so, he did what any other person would do in his situation: take a step forward and see where that leads him. His first step was to quit his old job and work for Marc Andreessen at Netscape. Circumstances and other people’s involvement lead him to take another step: build Loudcloud with Marc Andreessen. Interesting to note here is that if Ben had not quit his first job, he would not have met Marc Andreeseen and therefore not been able to build LoudCloud. Also, had Marc Andresseen not employed Ben, he would not have recognized Ben’s potential. Again, involvement from other people and circumstances then lead to Ben’s third step: selling LoudCloud and creating Opsware. As you probably guessed, other involvement from other people and circumstances lead to the next step: selling Opsware to HP and creating a venture capital firm with Marc Andreessen. And so, understanding that there are infinite ways of reaching your end goal is important, because it enables you to be flexible with ideas that come along the way. Flexibility to allow other people’s input, and to take advantage of opportunities that you hadn't foreseen. Ben demonstrates this in his journey to become a CEO, and to be honest, he became quite proficient at it.

(3) Pilot in the plane. Suffice it to say that Ben delegated work to the executives of his companies, but he always partnered with Marc Andreessen because he knew that Marc Andreessen set of skills complemented his: Marc Andreessen was the public face of the company because he thrived in that environment; Ben stayed in the background managing the company. He then goes to explain that the most important asset of a company is its employees. In light of the-pilot-in-the-plane principle, it makes a lot of sense that you keep your employees motivated because you will distribute the workload to them. Specifically in chapters 5 and 6, Ben explains the importance of taking care of the people, and creating the right in of culture in your company. The reason why the first priority of a company should be to take care of its people according to him is because they are the most knowledgeable individuals of your company. They know what the problems and strengths are because they do the work; managers, executives and CEOs orchestrate from above and may lack on smaller details. In order to have awareness of those smaller details migrate from the employees to the managers and then executive a great company culture has to be created. A great company culture is one in which workers are encouraged to talk about problems and strengths equally. Where they are awarded and recognized based on merit and not on lobbying skills. Where workers are encouraged to “move fast and break things,” meaning that workers should innovate and strive to cause breakthroughs. In this environment, workers like to go to work because it is interesting and genuinely fun. And when a worker wants to work, he/she is the most valuable asset of a company. That is why Ben knows how to delegate work and responsibility among the different hierarchical levels of his company. In analogy, a plane not only needs a pilot to operate satisfactorily. It also needs a co-pilot, stewardesses, a control tower, engineers, an air marshal, and passengers or else flying a plane is: not possible, not profitable and not safe. Ben knows this.

Stewardess Principle
This principle states that workers are individuals and for that reasons they must be encouraged to use their skills for the better of the company. Just like effectual reasoning has several components to it, so does the Stewardess Principle. Several of the key dimensions of the Stewardess Principle that I wish to discuss are: (1) culture, (2) motivation, and (3) power distance. Ben applies these dimensions to his company, and the result is obvious.

(1) Culture. Suffice it to say that Ben dedicates an entire chapter of his book to discuss how important it is to create the right culture in your company. Specifically, one has to minimize politics, encourage the right kind of ambition, and continuously have one-on-ones. By doing this, a company encourages and ensures that its workers have the right work ethics.

By minimizing politics (which means lobbying in order to achieve promotions or benefits) one reinforces the notion that if an employee works hard he/she will be rewarded accordingly. But most importantly, working hard becomes the only way to move up the ladder. No slacker will be able to lobby his/her way to the top. As a result, workers will not feel treated unjustly.

By encouraging the right kind of ambition, one avoids individual agendas or people trying to gain success at the expense of the company. The right kind of ambition is when a worker genuinely wants the company to succeed, and if the company succeeds he/she succeeds with it. The wrong kind of ambition, by contrast, is when a worker wants to succeed regardless of the company’s success. The way to encourage the right kind of ambition, according to Ben, is to seek out those employees with the wrong kind of ambition and fire them before they can rot others, and to screen possible employers while interviewing.

By establishing one-on-ones workers are able to voice any issues to their managers. According to Ben, during one-on-ones managers should do 10% talking and 90% listening. The main point of a one-on-one is for the worker to voice his thoughts and his concerns. This way if there are any problems in the company, the managers become aware of them and may pass the information along to executives and ultimately the CEO.

(2) Motivation. Motivation follows a well-established culture. If Ben had not established an excellent culture in his company he would not haven been able to ask his workers to come to work from 8am to 10pm for months at a time. As if that was not enough, Ben asked this of his workers on three consecutive occasions. This is evidence of what well-motivated stewards are capable of doing.

(3) Power distance. This dimension explains that because companies are hierarchical systems there is a potential for people to use power to abuse their subordinates. To prevent this from happening in his company, Ben placed top priority on one-on-ones. He almost fired one of his executives because he didn't do his one-on-ones. The point of one-on-ones is mentioned above, but they also an additional psychological effect. When managers listen to works, it shifts the power balance for the duration of the one-on-one. As a result, workers feel that the power distance is bridged, allowing them to work more closely with managers. And that is highly desirable.

And so, this is how Ben Horowitz exemplifies what a successful entrepreneur and CEO is. His self-awareness and creativity (and a few other personal traits) took him all the way to where he stands: co-founder of the Andreessen Horowitez venture capital firm valued at $4 billion.

The Easy Thing About "The Hard Thing About Hard Things" is Reading It
By Jeffrey Matthews
The easy thing about “The Hard Thing About Hard Things,” Andreessen Horowitz co-founder Ben Horowitz’s book about “Building a business when there are no easy answers,” is reading it.
That’s because it’s funny, to-the-point, and way more well-informed by real-world experience than most books that give advice ever are.
Like the secret to being a successful CEO: “Sadly, there is no secret, but if there is one skill that stands out, it’s the ability to focus and make the best move when there are no good moves.”
And, “Managers must lay off their own people. They cannot pass the task to HR or to a more sadistic peer.”
And, “The job of a big company executive is very different from the job of a small company executive…big company executives tend to be interrupt-driven. In contrast, when you are a startup, nothing happens unless you make it happen.”
But it’s not just catchy phrases and aphorisms that make the book something pretty much anybody who wants to build a company should read, it’s the experience that created them: Horowitz provides in brutal (and, for aspiring entrepreneurs, invaluable) detail the excruciating real-life experiences behind the advice, from his years as a Silicon Valley engineer and then as the CEO of a start-up with more near-death experiences than Keith Richards before its successful sale to HP.
Like how to fire people. What to say at the “all-hands” when you just had your first layoffs. What to tell an employee who asks if the company is being sold when it is being sold, but not yet. Why every company needs a “story,” and what makes a great company story (hint: see the letter Jeff Bezos wrote to Amazon shareholders in 1997.) When not to listen to your board. Even, literally, what questions a CEO should ask a prospect being considered for the key, all-important job in any start-up: head of sales.
I'm not a fan of “how-to” books, particularly those concerned with managing people, because they tend to be heavy on theory and light on reality, but the chapter emphatically titled “WHY YOU SHOULD TRAIN YOUR PEOPLE" proved the value of the author's experience because it explains the trap in which an engineer I know happens to find himself.
He is a software engineer for a start-up that was acquired by a large, fast-growing Silicon Valley company whose name rhymes with “Shalesforce.com.”
He is smart, highly motivated, eager to learn, and yet he is miserable at his job for precisely the reason Horowitz spells out as follows in “WHY YOU SHOULD TRAIN YOUR PEOPLE”:
“Often founders start companies with visions of elegant, beautiful product architectures that will solve so many of the nasty issues that they were forced to deal with in their previous jobs. Then, as their company becomes successful, they find that their beautiful product architecture has turned into a Frankenstein. How does this happen? As success drives the need to hire new engineers at a rapid rate, companies neglect to train the new engineers properly. As the engineers are assigned tasks, they figure out how to complete them as best they can. Often this means replicating existing facilities in the architecture, which leads to inconsistencies in the user experience, performance problems, and a general mess. And you thought training was expensive.”
That line is the exact truth. Just ask the engineer at Shalesforce.com. His managers—if they exist—ought to read this book.
In fact, anybody who wants to start a company, or work for a company, or build a company, or invest in a company, ought to read this book, because that’s not the only hard-learned truth in here.
Some others include:
“In high-tech companies, fraud generally starts in sales due to managers attempting to perfect the ultimate local optimization [i.e. optimize their own incentive pay].”
“The Law of Crappy People states: For any title level in a large organization, the talent on that level will eventually converge to the crappiest person with the title.”
“The world is full of bankrupt companies with world-class cultures. Culture does not make a company…. Perks are good, but they are not culture.”
“Nobody comes out of the womb knowing how to manage a thousand people. Everybody learns at some point.”
“The first rule of the CEO psychological meltdown is don’t talk about the psychological meltdown.”
And maybe the best of all, because it encapsulates so much of what the book is about: “Tip to aspiring entrepreneurs: If you don’t like choosing between horrible and cataclysmic, don’t become CEO.”
This book, on the other hand, is a choice between good and great, so read it.

There is no recipe but courage
By Herve Lebret
“Every time I read a management or self-help book, I find myself saying, “That’s fine, but that wasn’t really the hard thing about the situation.” The hard thing isn’t setting a big, hairy, audacious goal. The hard thing is laying people off when you miss the big goal. The hard thing isn’t hiring great people. The hard thing is when those “great people” develop a sense of entitlement and start demanding unreasonable things. The hard thing isn’t setting up an organizational chart. The hard thing is getting people to communicate within the organization that you just designed. The hard thing isn’t dreaming big. The hard thing is waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat when the dream turns into a nightmare. The problem with these books is that they attempt to provide a recipe for challenges that have no recipes. There’s no recipe for really complicated, dynamic situations. There’s no recipe for building a high-tech company; there’s no recipe for making a series of hit songs; there’s no recipe for playing NFL quarterback; there’s no recipe for running for president; and there’s no recipe for motivating teams when your business has gone to crap. That’s the hard thing about hard things— there is no formula for dealing with them.” This is how Horowitz begins.

Horowitz gives advice to entrepreneurs. And it is not business school-like advice indeed. “People often ask me how we’ve managed to work efficiently across three companies over eighteen years. Most business relationships either become too tense to tolerate or not tense enough to be productive after a while. Either people challenge each other to the point where they don’t like each other or they become complacent about each other’s feedback and no longer benefit from the relationship. With Marc and me, even after eighteen years, he upsets me almost every day by finding something wrong with my thinking, and I do the same for hi. It works.”

I began my review by quoting the first page. I will quote here with his final page: “Hard things are hard because there are no easy answers or recipes. They are hard because your emotions are at odds with your logic. They are hard because you don’t know the answer and you cannot ask for help without showing weakness. When I first became a CEO, I genuinely thought that I was the only one struggling. Whenever I spoke to other CEOs, they all seemed like they had everything under control. Their businesses were always going “fantastic” and their experience was inevitably “amazing”. But as I watched my peers’ fantastic, amazing businesses go bankrupt and sell for cheap, I realized I was probably not the only one struggling.” […] “Embrace your weirdness, your background, your instinct. If the keys are not there, they do not exist.”

The book is not an easy read. So you may not enjoy the book if you do not need to apply it now. Still it is a great book.
