The Harmony of Science & Scripture. (Creationism vs. Evolution)

My mother, (L.S. Tuttle, a Southern Baptist, & a Spanish college professor) first saw & heard the author of this book, Dr. Harry Rimmer, D.D., Sc. D. in the early 1930's at a lecture series at Ridgecrest, NC. This book is basically those lectures, in print. (Everybody told him he should publish those lectures, so he did. It was first copyrighted in 1936.) If you have ANY interest in the subject of Creationism vs. Evolution then this book is a MUST READ!

This should ALWAYS stay in print! I'd rate this book as 7 stars, if they went that far up, for perfection, but it only goes to 5 stars. So I give it 5 stars, for the best!

A FAMOUS APOLOGETICS WORK BY AN EARLY CREATIONIST

Harry Rimmer (1890-1952) was an American creationist, apologetics writer, and evangelist; he wrote a number of books, such as MODERN SCIENCE AND THE GENESIS RECORD, Dead Men Tell Tales, etc.

This book was first written in 1936 (and was republished in 1973). Rimmer wrote in the Foreword, "The matter contained in this volume of apologetics has been delivered in lecture form before hundreds of audiences and student groups, totalling many thousands of auditors... The author has revised this material and has put it in this permanent form, that it might be available to libraries and schools that require this type of apologetics."

Here are some additional quotations from the book:

"We would unhesitatingly state that when men of science agree unanimously upon any correlated body of facts and do not change their conclusions or agreements concerning these facts for several thousand years, we will then be willing, if necessary, to discard the Bible and accept their conclusions instead!" (Pg. 13)
"How did Job know (Job 38:7) that at the dawn of creation the morning stars sang together... At one time it was futilely attempted to evade this question by suggesting that this was poetic imagination on the part of Job... (but) through the marvels of modern physics we have learned many things about the tonal value of light." (Pg. 127)

Good, but needs a competent editor.

This book covers the Unity UI well, with very few omissions, and even dips into C# scripting. It's very adequate for getting started with Unity game development. I wish someone had proof-read it before it was published, however, since the amount of typos and grammatical errors slowed my reading of the text. If you are not bothered by that sort of thing, add another star to this review.

Extremely helpful, but maybe not for beginners

I think this may be my first amazon review, but I had to respond after seeing two very negative reviews about this book. First, I can understand that this book can be confusing, as it dives right in to functional programming (FP) without a primer or appendix to help beginners. (I strongly recommend [defmacro - Functional Programming For The Rest of Us](http://www.defmacro.org/ramblings/fp.html) for that purpose.) However, as an intermediate developer with an (apparently) above-average exposure to FP, I found this book to be extremely illuminating and incredibly useful for me to advance to the next level of FP understanding.

Sidenote: One reviewer asserts that the author is confused and perhaps lacks knowledge. I don't know Neal Ford, but I am very familiar with the output of the company at which he works - ThoughtWorks. I can say for certain that anyone employed by them for years is certainly knowledgeable about software engineering, particularly when it comes to real-world usage.

Why did I find the book so valuable?
* As you can see from the [hosted code](https://github.com/oreillymedia/functional_thinking), Ford accompanies all of his code examples with unit tests, which I find essential for understanding and trust.
* Most examples are done in Clojure (a LISP variant for the JVM), Groovy (a dynamic JVM language), **and** Java 8 (sometimes using the Functional Java library), as well as a number in Scala. I find that comparisons between languages improve my learning and retention, in addition to giving extra perspective.
* Ford guides the reader through the mix of terminology for the essential FP functions and how they differ by language: map (when it is called 'collect' and why; a.k.a select), reduce (when it is called 'collect'; plus how it differs from fold), and filter (a.k.a. where).
* All concepts are followed by (or introduced with) example code - this is not just a theory book.
* Some Design Patterns are reviewed and translated to their FP equivalents, which are often simpler.
* He provides the best explanation of recursion I've ever read:
"In reality, [recursion is] a computer-sciencey way to iterate over things by calling the same method from itself, reducing the collection each time, and always carefully ensuring you have an exit condition. Many times, recursion leads to easy-to-understand code because the core of your problem is the need to do the same thing over and over to a diminishing list."
* Ford also provides a helpful explanation of Currying vs partial application (better in context, but here is the crux):

For Canadian corrections offi cer Vern Thibedeau, it all began at "Disney World"-or at least the penitentiary that ironically carried that nickname. Within ten months, he is seriously injured. One year later he has a pistol aimed at his head during an incident in which two officers and a civilian are shot. Four years later, an inmate murders a correctional offi cer, who is Vern's friend, and a food steward. Over the course of a career spanning twenty six years, Vern was assigned to fi ve different prisons, but his time behind the stark walls of Kingston Penitentiary was his most difficult. During his assignment there, he dealt with some of the most notorious and dangerous inmates in Canada's history, such as Clifford Olson and others as bad as Paul Bernardo and Russell Williams. He was part of several hostage incidents and was taken hostage himself once. The stress of his job manifested itself in a variety of physical and emotional injuries, and he found himself forced to take time off to recover. It all culminated during a horrific time when a sex offender is taken to segregation and his victim is approximately the age of Vern's own daughter. It all struck a little too close for comfort. Later, Vern worked closely with police while investigating a fellow officer who was also a friend. After retirement, Vern is contacted by the police who request more information regarding the investigation. These are his true stories of his years working behind the bars.

For twenty-six years, Vern Thibedeau worked in five different facilities within the Canadian corrections system, including Kingston Penitentiary in Ontario. Now retired, he works as an independent security officer. He lives outside of Toronto, Ontario, with his wife.

A good read with stressful moments

'The Door' reads like a journal, recounting the challenges of being a Correctional Officer in a federal penitentiary. It is a very realistic account, and the author expresses his feelings and the stress of the job very well. I'm amazed that he stayed there in various jobs until retirement.

Grew Up with this Book!

I absolutely loved this book as a child and even as a preteen. It is more for young children, but even reading it as a pre-teen, I enjoyed the way the book reads like a dialogue. It teaches so much morals and goodness...all from Jesus Christ. It is Bible-based, so you know that what is in it, is true and right... you can look up the scriptures that are in the book and see this. If every child in the world lived by the teachings of Jesus, we would have amazing adults. Too bad not many listen. But if you want to teach your children good morals from a young age, this book is awesome... you can use it no matter what religion you are. Seriously, it's a great book!

out of print but well worth finding

This is one of the first children's books that the Watchtower produced for children. It is simple and has line drawings instead of photographs, but the format is to read it to your small child and have an interchange. All kinds of topics are covered that are beneficial for everyday life, whether one is a Bible reader or not. The world today has no morals left. This book can teach you and your child thr basic morals and ways to live that make life go well. After 30 years, I still refer to it.

A WATCHTOWER BOOK INTENDED FOR CHILDREN

This 1971 publication of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (Jehovah's Witnesses) is of the 4"x6", 190-page format they favored through the 1960s. It is in larger-than-usual print, and has various illustrations. With an initial pressing of 15,000,000 copies, it was intended for VERY wide distribution. It is perhaps the first Watchtower publication to portray Jesus with a beard (albeit with relatively short hair).

Here are some quotations from the book, that often illustrate distinctive doctrines of the WBTS:

"Jesus was the first person that God made." (Pg. 16)
"When you are in a very deep sleep, you do not know what is going on around you, do you?... It is like that with dead persons. They do not know anything that is happening. They do not feel anything. And they cannot do anything." (Pg. 70)
"What about the Great Teacher? Did he celebrate his birthday? -- No. There is no place in the Bible that says anything about a birthday party for Jesus. Even after Jesus died, his true followers did not celebrate his birthday." (Pg. 126)
"Even today men set up images for worship. Some are made of wood or stone or metal. Would you bow to these images?" (Pg. 142)
"Should everyone eat the bread and drink the wine at the Memorial? No, Jesus told those who do: 'You will have part in my kingdom and sit on thrones in heaven with me.' This is the first book in the Blondie McGhee series. I created Blondie McGhee because I wanted to create the fun and laugh-worthy books my own daughters would love.

Blondie is a zero drama and no-frills fourth grader who wants to be a detective.

About the Author
Ashley Eneriz is a finance writer and stay-at-home mom of two girls. While her finance articles have appeared on popular sites such as Huffington Post, Yahoo, MSN, Life Hack, Business Insider, Fidelity, and more, her true passion is to write fun and wholesome books for kids.

Ashley believes in blessing others continually, which is why 20% of book sale profits help a mama and their family in need.

Cute detective story for kids

A cute detective story, just right for the age group. Blondie McGhee solves simple mysteries, with nothing scary, and has a lot of fun along the way. Well written with adorable illustrations, a lovely read.

Love Blondie McGhee...

First of all, I love the cover art! Second, I thought the story was really cute and engaging. Both my nine year old daughter and her twelve year old brother listened as I read this aloud to them. Even their older two siblings listened in for part of the story. Shh. ;)

Both of my kids really enjoyed the story. They thought it was funny, loved the characters and their interactions, and enjoyed the detective story line. Whenever I made them wait for the next chapter, they begged for just one more. They are both looking forward to more stories with Blondie McGhee.

I liked how the characters worked out their issues with each other and there weren't any rude over the top behaviors. She didn't really like one of the kids, but she was more exasperated than anything with him. When he pulled a prank on her, she did get mad, but again, it wasn't nasty or rude.

Rather, in the end, she gave him the benefit of the doubt, solved the case, and both characters learned something along the way. I very much appreciate how Ashley handled everything in the story. Like my kids, I'm looking forward to reading more of Blondie McGhee's stories.

I recommend this as either a read aloud or for any child who enjoys reading chapter books.

What a fun and cute book

What a fun and cute book. My 7 year old loves it and can't put it down. Not only is it an awesome book but the author is donating 20% of her sales to a child in need. I think that shows a lot of this authors character!
