It's amazing how digital photography has allowed the photographer to act more like an illustrator or like a fine art painter then before. I miss the old vision but the future looks exciting and this book gives shows many great examples of the 'new' world in photography.

Not an effective survey

Bought this to have a visual survey of developments in 21st century art photography. This book wants to be it, but isnt. Grouped in 5 categories: Something borrowed, ie appropriation, Layers of reality ie compositing, All the world is stage, ie arrangements, Hand and eye, ie manipulation of the print, and Post-Photojournalism. These cover the major areas of new approaches to photography, and each section has at least one really creative example, and at least two really weak ones. The selection quality of the examples is weak at best. And famous practitioners that were the innovators in each area are not included or even mentioned. The book intros to each section doe not give an overview of the approach but rather trivial details of the work of the particular artists. Disappointed that the book doesnt fulfill the survey function it intends.
