Chasing the Dragon: How a Chronic Quitter Became Addicted to the Marathon, by Bill Dowis

How a chronic quitter became addicted to the marathon.

Bill Dowis spent the first 29 years of his life trying to be as comfortable as possible. When things proved too challenging he gave up, and when life handed him something that was too difficult he simply quit. But with a family to take care of, and his weight on the rise, he was forced to push outside his comfort zone where he found euphoria in the pain and accomplishment of running.

Chasing the Dragon is the story of running for reasons other than to simply get in shape. It is the story of running through loss, pain, pride, success, failure, friendship, and love. It is the story of the change that comes from running, the constant search to redefine possible, and how a chronic quitter became addicted to the most physically demanding thing in his life.

A very inspiring book which is not just for runners!
By Buddy Gott
I think some readers may see the subject matter of this book and think the book is just for runners. It's not. I think this book will be inspiring to all who read it.

I'm not a runner, but I was able to relate to the many of the struggles the author encountered earlier in his life before he found something that he became very passionate about. When we find something we're passionate about, our entire lives can go in wonderful directions we'd never even dreamt of before.

It happened for Bill Dowis and it can happen for all of us. Read his story here. He's got a great writing style and this book moved me and inspired
me. I bet it will for you too.

My favorite sleeper surprise in a long, long time, which any reader should be eager to dive into.
By Garrett Robinson
Bill and I have known each other for some time online. To my great surprise, when he published this book he sent me a paperback copy, though not with any obligation (implied or otherwise) to review.

I try to keep myself healthy, but I wouldn't say I'm very interested in fitness. Even less am I inclined toward running, or heaven forbid, marathons. One might read this book looking for inspiration to start exercise, or to keep exercising once you've begun. None of that was on my mind when I began. I was not expecting to get much, if anything, from this book.

Those expectations, or lack thereof, were shattered from the very beginning. Chapter One hits you like a punch in the gut, yet leaves you aching to turn the next page. As it progresses the book is gripping, earnest, heartbreaking and maddeningly inspirational in turn. I could not help but be sucked in by Bill's pure and unabashed love for the marathon, and his strenuous personal trials in a life that seemed, more and more with every page, to revolve around his training. But far from a pattern of selfishness, his inner drive stems from a desire to be his best self. Pride motivates him, as it does all of us, but more so, love for his family and a desire to find friendship and a community that have been lacking all his life. The tale of this journey, once begun, cannot be abandoned without gargantuan mental effort.

There are no passages of flowery prose or soaring turns of phrase in this book, thank god. The book does not need them, and would be cheapened by their inclusion. Yes, all authors must make some slight concessions to story structure—in this case, excellently done, with a midpoint that might make you weep and a third act that made me stay up late to finish (a running book, for crying out loud!). But rather than wrapping his memoir in some style meant to titillate the literary snobs, Bill has infused it instead with the qualities that define him, as we swiftly learn: earnestness, authenticity, passion, drive, and a faint disbelief at the capability of the human spirit.

This book, which I formerly viewed as a possible chore to appease a longtime Internet buddy, has become instead my one of my surprise favorite reads. I would try to guess at the type of reader who would enjoy it, but that category must be too broad to describe without doubling the length of this review.

In summary, if you are in doubt, or if you are not: read it anyway.

Great Book
By Steve Longbrake
Great book from a first time author. His story of how he became a long distance runner is amazing. Hard to put the book down while reading it. If you are a fan of John Bingham's Accidental Athlete you will love this book as well. Glad I got a chance to read it. It is inspirational and makes you want to go out and hit the road.

Outstanding for a self-taught course in GIS
By B. Bearden
I just completed a graduate course in GIS and remote sensing, and we used this book as the basic guide to using GIS. Prior to this, I had always relied on other people to "make maps" for me. Now I am not only making my own maps, but also using GIS to perform many different types of analysis for my job. This book was key to that - the course I took didn't really cover much GIS in the class materials - that was focused mostly on remote sensing and researching what others have done with GIS. I've sat through probably a half-dozen GIS "workshops" over the years and never really learned anything. Taking your time with this book, and no one standing over your shoulder and telling you which buttons to click, is really the best way to learn. I liked this book so much I ordered 10 more for my staff, and 9 of them have now completed it, too, and are working on their projects to earn the certificate from me that they have mastered basic ArcGIS use. I've now got a backlog of 15 other employees who want to be in on the next round of training! Very highly recommended!

Perfect. Exactly what I was looking for.
By Biluxi
I needed a quick study guide (lesson) on map building in ArcGIS.
This was perfect. It prepared me for a job interview.

Be careful about starting your 6 month license. Be sure to start it
on the CPU you will have continued access to. You can not un-install
and then re-install on another computer.

Great book for getting familiar with ArcGIS 10.1 and as a reference for the features it covers
By JERRY D HAWBAKER
This book provides a good overall view of ArcGIS with accurate examples, with an exception to chapter 19. The chapter topics are arranged in a logical order and build on previous chapters although the supplied data allows a user to skip chapters if desired. It does not dilute the content by attempting to cover every tool and feature in ArcGIS but can serve as a good reference for the topics it does include.it took me about a month to work through the book and I feel I have a good foundatin from which to continue exploring the software. I will look to ESRI Press for other publications.

A Passion for Leadership: Lessons on Change and Reform from Fifty Years of Public Service, by Robert M Gates

From the former secretary of defense and author of the acclaimed number-one best-selling memoir Duty, a characteristically direct, informed, and urgent assessment of why big institutions are failing us and how smart, committed leadership can effect real improvement regardless of scale.

Across the realms of civic and private enterprise alike, bureaucracies vitally impact our security, freedoms, and everyday life. With so much at stake, competence, efficiency, and fiscal prudence are essential, yet Americans know these institutions fall short. Many despair that they are too big and too hard to reform.

Robert Gates disagrees. Having led change successfully at three monumental organizations - the CIA, Texas A&M University, and the Department of Defense - he offers us the ultimate insider's look at how major bureaus, organizations, and companies can be transformed, which is by turns heartening and inspiring and always instructive.

With practical, nuanced advice on tailoring reform to the operative culture (we see how Gates worked within the system to increase diversity at Texas A&M); effecting change within committees; engaging the power of compromise ("in the real world of bureaucratic institutions, you almost never get all you want when you want it"); and listening and responding to your team, Gates brings the full weight of his wisdom, candor, and devotion to civic duty to inspire others to lead desperately needed change.

A Remarkable Leader's Techniques Forged in the Crucible of Public Service
By L. Leonard Wolner
A thoughtful and honest appraisal of success and failures over 50 years in executive leadership positions, and lessons for others seeking to reform and transform large enterprises. An inspiring account by a tried and tested leader who transcended politics and survived with his dignity and sense of humor intact.

Good start - Poor finish
By A. Barnes
The first five or six chapters are interesting but after this the book gets very repetitive. I was hoping for some real insights and experiences about the times Gates spent as Secretary but most of the writing was limited to broad generalisations about people and events. I gave up on the book before the end.

Good read...although somewhat repetitive.
By Deborah Grayson
This book is a good read. It is really a bunch of vignettes of Robert Gates experiences and little teaching lessons associated. After a while it does get a bit repetitive, but all in all quite a good read. Recommend if you work with people and aim to be a leader.

Civilization and War, by Brett Bowden

'Civilization and War is an exceptionally erudite and timely meditation on the close relationship between civilization, progress and war in modern political thought and policy from the Enlightenment to the war on terror. It is a fitting complement to Dr. Bowden's path-breaking study, The Empire of Civilization (2009).'
- James Tully, University of Victoria, Canada

'Civilization and War addresses a concern of all thinking persons in elegant language with erudition to match. Bowden's readers will profit by stretching their minds, learn much to mull over and discuss with their friends.'
- William H. McNeill, University of Chicago, US

'A lucid, wide-ranging and fascinating discussion of how 'civilization' has given rise to ideals of peace and progress and is - perhaps inescapably - prone to technologically-advanced, destructive warfare.'
- Andrew Linklater, Aberystwyth University, UK

'Following his award-winning The Empire of Civilization, Brett Bowden's Civilization and War is a much-needed corrective to Kantian hopes for cosmopolitan governance. Short as it may be, this is an eminently readable book that rightfully poses uncomfortable questions with regard to the inextricable link between 'civilization' and 'barbarism.' It is also a reminder, however, to political realists to take the ethical questions of armed conflict more seriously. Such violence is overcome less by normative moral frameworks than by the actual practices of migration and cooperation as much as by exchanges of goods and ideas.'
- Christian Emden, Rice University, US

Civilization and war were born around the same time in roughly the same place they have effectively grown up together. This challenges the belief that the more civilized we become, the less likely the resort to war in order to resolve differences and disputes. The related assumption that civilized societies are more likely to abide by the rules of war is also in dispute. Where does terrorism fit into debates about civilized and savage war? What are we to make of talk about an impending 'clash of civilizations'? In a succinct yet wide ranging survey of history and of ideas that calls in to question a number of conventional wisdoms, Civilization and War explores these issues and more whilst outlining the two-way relationship between civilization and war.

Providing an alternative perspective to conventional thinking, this book will appeal to a wide interdisciplinary audience across all regions of the globe. The material is both original and highly topical and is written in a sharp, snappy style that makes it accessible to a wide readership, including upper-level undergraduates, postgraduates, academic specialists and informed general readers. Civilization and War makes important contributions to the fields of international relations, peace and conflict studies, political theory and the history of ideas, and will be of interest to people with a curiosity about world history and current affairs.

Review
"As a secondary classroom teacher for 19 years....I can attest to the 'real world' focus of this text. It deals with the reality of classroom teaching in today's society. It doesn't sugar coat or idealize the teaching profession, but prepares the student teachers for the day-to-day rewards and challenges. It is a truthful and practical text, one filled with inspiration, humor, and examples of what the teacher can expect when he/she enters his/her classroom."

Hardly anything changes from edition to edition - I'm so glad the professor for my course didn't care which edition we bought ... all that changed was the order the chapters appear in and the page numbers ...
One of the more unbiased text books I've found ...
