About the Author
Rinko Kawauchi
Born in Shiga, Japan, in 1972. Lives and works in Tokyo. Graduated from Seian University of Art and Design in 1993 and started working as a photographer on freelance basis from 1997. In 2001 she simultaneously released a series of three photographic books - UTATANE, HANABI, HANAKO from Little More, which created an overnight sensation in the photography world in Japan. In 2002, she was awarded prestigious 27th Annual Kimura Ihei Award for two of the books, UTATANE and HANABI. Awarded the 25th Infinity Award in Art Category by ICP, NY in 2009, she is one of the most unique and notable photographers of her generation.
Further publications of Rinko Kawauchi, which should be mentioned, are AILA (FOIL 2004), the eyes, the ears, and Cui Cui (FOIL, 2005 / both) and Semear (FOIL, 2007).
Major solo exhibitions include: Foundation Cartier pour l'art Contemporain, Paris (2005), The Photographers' Gallery, London (2006), "AILA + the eyes, the ears, " Hasselblad Centre, Goeborg (2007), "

Charming book.

I've loved Kawauchi since my beginner photography class observed her work, simply summarizing it as "whimsical". But it's much more than that. It's poetic. And a great inspiration to get into medium format film. This book is a good piece of work to start off with if you're just getting into her. Her other work is phenomenal.

The Eyes, The Ears

beautiful book. beautiful collection. the design of rinko's books all perfectly match the theme. perfection in complex simplicity, or simple complexity. hard to explain, but if you're a fan of Rinko's, or interested in lifestyle/existential photography, this book is a great starter. be careful though, you might find yourself wanting to pick up the rest of his books after you get through this one! they are priced pretty high some of them, around $100, but i know they're worth it to me. like i said this is a good starter, at one of his more inexpensive collections. the book is also smaller, so it's nice to travel with. perfect for on the go inspiration if you're a travelling photographer.
