Escher's House
By gaia
This is a hard one to review as a stand alone work. Mainly because you HAVE to read the other parts of the whole (the rest of the series) to appreciate it's purpose. Having said that I honestly believe it should have been merged with book 3 in order not to disappoint readers the way the reviews indicate it so obviously did. In this part of the story, our heroes from book 1 are joined by some new characters. They have a new quest to follow, which is linked to what happened in the previous volume, but does not involve the tunnels under Briar Hill (that DOES come up again, trust me, just not in this section). I gave it 4 stars because I HAVE read book 3 and can see it's purpose and to be frank I did enjoy the fact that the author chose, at this juncture, to not just recycle book 1. I can understand some of the other reviewer's frustrations though - this section, while entertaining, just doesn't seem to pack as much punch as it's predecessor and so it feels a little flat in comparison. I urge you to continue reading though, because things do take off again. I stand by my previous assertion though that THIS part of the story should be combined into book 3 to avoid reader drop off.

Great sequel with a new mystery
By Amazon Customer
The novel continues the story of Albert and Brandy, and it refers to the events from The Box, but it also introduces a completely new mystery and a bunch of new characters. The plot is more complex than in The Box, and the ending leaves even more unexplained secrets.

What I really like is that Brian Harmon does not finish his stories with any obvious cliffhangers. He is much more sophisticated. He wraps up the story, but at the same time leaves a lot of unanswered questions and unexplained mysteries. This technique makes his novels really fascinating.

Brian Harmon is one of the best horror writers I read, and he's way better then most bestselling authors of this genre. If you haven't yet read any of his books, I really encourage you to give his works a try. You will not be disappointed.

A decent sequel
By J. McCandless
As a stand-alone novel, this would have been so-so. It had a much slower pace than the previous book in the series, with less mystery and adventure. I decided while reading this book that to do it justice with a review, I needed to complete all the existing books in the series, and I'm glad that I did. By itself, I probably would have given it a 3 star rating. However, when taken in context of the series as a whole, it was a necessary story to tell to bring together elements of the greater story.

The writing itself was just as good as the previous novel, but the slower pace for the majority of the book (with what appeared at the time to be irrelevant back-story of some of the characters) made it somewhat less appealing...for a while at least. The last third of the novel, however, was a whole different story. It was fast paced, action-driven, and a horror fan's delight. I recommend sticking with this book through the slower start. the back-story, when taken in the context of the whole series, is anything but irrelevant, and the payoff of the last third of the book is well-worth the wait.

My rating is an average of the rating I would have given it as a stand alone book (3 stars) and the rating it deserves as a crucial piece of the greater story (5 stars).

I recommend it highly, but only to those who have read the first book, and intend to continue the series and read them all.
