Some Notes About This Book

EDIT August 2016 - This is no longer the book used (in any edition) for Biology 1090 at SLCC. Course now uses a new book that is no listed (yet) on Amazon. If it gets listed, I will link to it here.
General Notes:
This edition of the book is used by the Salt Lake Community College for all Biology 1090 courses since Fall 2014. As of Spring 2015 it is still the current primary textbook for the course (most instructors also require a smaller secondary textbook). The SLCC Bookstore lists the book for 98 used and 131 new. The new book comes with an access code to a publisher's website--some instructors require you to have the code, some don't. Since the code is very expensive check if you need it before you buy it. You also can buy the code separate (from the website) so you can go that route, too, if you need it later. The code is good for one semester only.
Custom vs. Standard Versions:
This custom edition of the book is derived from the standard book Biology: Science for Life, with Physiology, 4th Edition, by Colleen Belk and Virginia Borden Maier (ISBN-13: 978-0321767837). The standard book has more chapters (that are not used in the SLCC class), but may be easier to find (and usually is cheaper if purchased used). The page numbers and the chapter numbers do not match between the SLCC Custom 2nd Edition and the Standard 4th Edition--but otherwise they are identical in needed content. Sell-back of the standard version is much easier unless you're selling back to the SLCC bookstore.
Standard vs. Standard Versions
Even more confusingly, there are two standard versions of the 4th edition of the textbook--the "normal" version and the one "with physiology". You definitely need the version "with physiology" for SLCC Biol 1090. The publisher also sells electronic-only copies of the book, combination packages, and even has a rental option--but I don't know much about any of that so you'd be taking your chances there.
Current vs. Previous Editions:
The SLCC Custom 2nd Edition is very similar to the SLCC Custom 1st Edition (just as the Standard 4th Edition is very similar to the Standard 3rd Edition) which may be much cheaper. There are definite pagination and even chapter number differences, however. But for a savvy student they are survivable. The differences are often focused on the portions of the book used for class assignments, however, so if you buy an old edition you'll probably need to friend-up with somebody with the new edition so you can copy probably 15-20 pages from their book.
